Is AMD Setting Itself Up for a Fall?

AMD has the lead but only just. In most tests AMD wins but the margin is a small one and Intel is a relentless opponent. The question of how long AMD can stay ahead is one fraught with tension. However, it seems almost certain that if the smaller firm continues working the way it has over the last year, it won't be long before Intel is back in front. -- The Inquirer

I thought this essay over at the The Inquirer was pretty good. The author contends that executive complaicency and marketing incompetency may very well reduce AMD again to a minor bit player (no pun intended).

I don't know about some of his assumptions and conclusions though, Leo. I'm pretty sure that if AMD could make 3 GHz hammers right now in marketable quantities, you would see them on the market so they could really gain some market share. I'm pretty sure at this point that AMD has run into the same speed/heat wall as Intel and IBM (with the Apple G5 procs) on the 90 nanometer process. They are now releasing 90nm parts but none of them are fast 90nm procs. Their newest and fastest processor is still based on 130 nm process, which is a lot more expensive to produce than it would be at 90nm (less procs per wafer). I would imagine that they are probably better off on the heat issue than Intel, but I just don't know for sure on that either.
