Sony's Home Server Stores 1 Terabyte

edited October 2004 in Science & Tech
A terabyte of storage sounds like something a missile base may need, but Sony has started selling a consumer device with that much room.
The Vaio Type X, which is available only in Japan, is a home server that contains four 250GB hard drives: two for PC files and two others for audiovisual materials such as stored TV programs and music. The machine, which costs about $5,000, also comes with seven TV tuners and a special interface that lets consumers see thumbnails of what they record. Sony released the device at CEATEC, a large tech show taking place here this week. The unusual configuration results from the vagaries of Japanese television. The country has seven network stations, and cable is not as common as in the United States. With Type X, people can record shows from all seven stations automatically and then delete what they don't want to watch.

I have 400gb and I am out of space. I converted my entire CD collection to lossless AAC, I have over a thousand RAW camera files from my EOS digital camera - they are about 8mb each, and I converted my kids' VHS collection to mpg4. Not to mention I have Battlefield 1942, Doom 3, Battlefield Vietnam, Painkiller, Delta Force, UT2K4, Far Cry, and more. Oh, and whenever I make a stupid home video of the kids at the cider mill or something, that's about 12gb raw and then another 400-500mb for the compressed version, and I have quite a few of those.

1tb for home is not enough, methinks. Especially as my photo collection grows. Not only do I have the 8mb RAW files, but then I have color corrected versions that I have worked on, web versions, etc. For one photo, I can have 30-40mb of data or more if it's a layered composite.
