Best vid card for various prices?

edited November 2004 in Hardware
Just trying to get an idea of the best vid cards for varying price ranges. I often build comps for friends/relatives, and they always have different needs as far as video cards. Some care more about cost than performance, and vice versa. Most of the time they want me to spend less than $100 on a vid card, but some are willing to toss in a few more dollars. What do you think the best cards are for the following (please assume fairly up-to-date systems, say something like 2.0 to 2.8 GHz, 512 DDR, but not overclocked):

Best card for gaming?
-> Under $100
-> $100 - $150

Best card for general use?
-> Under $100
-> $100 - $150

    No one ever responded to the question... searching through the threads it seems a Radeon 9800 Pro is the best bet around $150 or less? I'd like to drop down in price, but I'm not sure if there are any vid cards cheaper worth gaming on.

    Best card for gaming?
    -> Under $100
    Radeon 9500 Pro (ebay) or 9550.

    -> $100 - $150
    Radeon 9700 Pro or 256-bit 9800 Pro if you can find one

    Best card for general use?
    -> Under $100
    Whatever works. Even 5-year-old Rage 128s and GeForce2 MXes are fast enough for 2d stuff. I'd just go with a Radeon 7500 or 9000.

    -> $100 - $150
    Waste of money for someone who isn't gaming.

    I would say the same thing. radeon 9700pros may be hard to come by... also a geforce 4 ti 4200 is an pretty nice for the sub 100 gaming area but also hard to find new..

    If they are not gaming any old card works fine. A radeon 7500 is cheap and does a good job.

    256-bit 9800 pro?
    Just to double-check (I do this sometimes) you DID mean bit, and not meg, right?
    hmmm...is it better than a GeForce FX 5600 Ultra?

    Yes, I meant bit, and it's far, far better than a FX5600 Ultra.
