ATI Releases Driver Package Catalyst 4.10

edited October 2004 in Science & Tech
ATI posted its monthly driver update. Version 4.10 will improve performance for the game Doom 3 and brings new driver enhancements dubbed Catalyst A.I.
As with most driver updates, the new package primarily increases performance and removes bugs occurring in certain applications. The new version 4.10 tunes Radeon graphics cards to run faster with Doom 3. According to ATI, speed increases range from three percent for the X300 series to up to 14 percent for the X800 Pro model. 9xxx series graphics cards will gain four to eight percent, ATI said. A noteworthy addition to the driver package is Catalyst A.I., which allows the driver to analyze applications and textures to maximize graphics performance and enhance stability while delivering the high visual quality, according to ATI. Version 4.10 also introduces support for both 720p and 1080i HDTV mode for both CRTs and DFPs. A new properties tab labeled 'Troubleshoot' is added to the ATI Classic Control Panel for both the FPD and Monitor properties page.

Uhhmm ... does anyone else hate the Control Center as much as I do? It took a bit of getting used to at first, and now, aside from the candy-coated-colors (what's with ALL THE "C"s?!), which I changed, it's alright. But it takes forever to load! That's pretty much all I've got against it now. Hopefully they've fixed that a bit, because I think it's nice once you get used to it...

i hate that the control center is the top of the list when you right click on the desktop. that just annoys me so much.

I got 2 friends on Teamspeak right now telling me that they are crashing every few minutes while playing Enemy Territory. Both are describing the exact same problem.

I for 1 am going to avoid them...

I like the control center. I hate the loading but overall it's much better than the control panel. I really like the previews it gives in the anti-aliasing and aniso. filtering sections.

Entropy, you can still use the newer drivers without the control center, if you wish. ATi has downloads for the catalysts with and without the control center. :)

I've been waiting for this release for the catalyst ai for a while. Hope it doesn't suck!

Yeah, I know. I actually find it much more intuitive / easy to access than before, I just hate waiting for it to load... that's mainly why I hate it.

    *bump, just in case*

Um, is it critical to uninstall the drivers I have now, and then install the 4.10s? Or can I just start up the 4.10 installation right away?

Not critical. Many people will tell you it's always best to wipe the hard drive free of any older catalysts, or nvidia's drivers, but I have NEVER had a problem with my system related to video drivers, or the bad installation OF those drivers. Different for every computer, i guess?

Some users can get away with installing new drivers over the top; many end up with problems. It's always best to completely remove the old drivers as well as the control program. Recommend installation of new drivers in Safe Mode also. You might also consider the Omega drivers, based on the Catalyst drivers. I've been running the Omega versions now for over a year.

I've been installing new drivers over old drivers for about 8 years with nary a problem.

I've installed over old drivers previously, I was just checking if maybe there was a performance issue or something weird that happened. I guess not :). Also, I've used the Omegas, too, but I don't really see the purpose of them at all...

One of the reasons I use Omega's is for ATI cards that are soft-modded. It used to be that the Omega series were superior for that application. I don't if that's still so. I just got accustomed to using them, so still continue. One big advantage of the Omegas is that an overclocking console is part of the package.

Ah yeah, forgot about that. I remember that part now, that WAS a nifty thing :). But it hardly pays to overclock a video card, unless you're able to get tons of mhz. Which, in my case, I can't...
