question about hijackthis

edited November 2004 in Science & Tech
why its important to upgrade to hijackthis 1.98?
hijack this is not like adaware or spybot that need to upgrade since they always update their spywere database...

hijack this just search the computer for every proccess or toolbar that it finds no with no diference if its good toolbar or bad toolbar...

so why update it?

    The short answer: bug fixes.

Because it uses rules to decide what is bad.... In essence, heuristics are used to decide what to flag. 1.98.2 does the job faster and better, with a few bug fixes also thrown in. Essentially, it does not quite flag all processes, if it DID do that, the logs would be 200-230 pages or more on my machine here (which it flags NOTHING on). Instead, it flags browser and browsing related flags that are likely to be junk by the way the registry entires are crafted, and looks for run links to missing files, and that kind of thing. It in reality is flagging a TINY subset of what is in the registry in a Widnows box.

Earlier versions flagged a few processes that later were determined to be not really bad by many folks, so the rules were slightly tweaked to not list those. It also, as said above, scans FASTER than it used to.

    'Nuff said, methinks.

In addition to the above, it checks a couple of important items that earlier versions did not.

It digs further into the registry than previous version too.
