Visiontek to sell Radeon 9800 PRO for $299

Price is hard to beat...

NEWLY RE-BORN Visiontek has made an interesting move that could catalyse the minds of people deciding whether to buy an Nvidia Geforce FX 5900 Ultra or a Radeon 9800 PRO.

For its Xtasy 9800 Pro Video Card, AGP 8X, 128MB DDR it struck a deal with compusa.com where you can buy the card for $299 using a rebate.

If you push the marketing belly button fluff aside, a Radeon with 128MB performs practically identically to a 256MB card.

We think this Visiontek deal is not bad for a card that will let you play Half Life 2 without worrying about performance.

By comparison, the Nvidia 5900 Ultra in the US costs about $399 or as much as $430+ for the Aopen GeForce FX5900 Ultra 256MB DDR AGP8X for CRT, TVO, & DVI.

Even if the Radeon 9800 PRO performance is compared to a Geforce FX 5900 non Ultra, the Visiontek offer is still $30-$40 cheaper.

While the Nvidia card does perform better, the difference is piffling.

That´s comparing an apple with a pear.

Cheapest 256mb Radeon 9800 Pro on Pricewatch is $414 and that´s for the OEM version.
Can´t see anything sensational about the Visiontek deal really.

except that it's like $350 after taxes with overnight shipping... I haven't seen a visiontek 9800 pro for that price after tax & shipping anywhere yet. You can pick up a FIC 9800 for $318 before tax/shipping, but I wouldn't touch a FIC ANYTHING if you paid me. The only cards I'd buy are BBATi, Sapphire, and Visiontek...
