Iwill To Release Dual-Opteron Workstation In Small Form Factor

edited December 2004 in Science & Tech
Iwill is soon to release the ZMAXdp, a dual-processor workstation box neatly packaged in a small form factor.
The product release comes after months of delays that were rooted in the obvious: fitting and cooling dual Opteron chips in the small form factor. Nevertheless, the feat is impressive. I have always been impressed by the small form factor systems, especially as potential media center systems. Until the slim media center PCs become mainstream, small form factor boxes are the only systems I'd ever consider letting sit in my living room. But even for office or desktop use, I think this is certainly the right direction. The Iwill system even manages to fit an AGP 8x slot, along with room for dual hard drives. Rumor is that Iwill is planning on surpassing this product with a similar release that has dual PCI Express (SLI) graphics capability--that would certainly be impressive.

Two processors, and two video cards in SLI...talk about a cooling nightmare. They'd need a power supply more powerful than what's currently used in SFF cases as well.

Whyw ould they need a more powerful PSU?

    AMD Opteron 250: ~75w of power x2 = 150w
    6800 Ultra: ~75w of power x2 = 150w
    10,000rpm HDD (who would put raptors in a SFF system, I don't know, but I'm sure someone will): 30w x 2 = 60w

Total power consumption (not including optical drive(s), fans, etc.): about 360w. Which is about 110w more than the largest PS in a SFF system currently, and 100-200w more than what your average generic "400w" PS can actually put out.

OK I didn't know what SFF meant, and took it out of context... Small Form Factor, just got it hehe.

Hehe I guess that means even Geeky1 won't touch that. :D

What the hell gave you that idea? I want one. I'll buy myself one after I get some other stuff organized. Maybe. :D
