    DVD-RAM!

9.4GB discs, cheaper drives than DVD-/+ anything, and readily available media. The format was MADE for archival. And considering the media is the same price (or cheaper than DVD+/- media) and holds DOUBLE the amount of data..I'd say it's prime for our use.

No. But we're not looking to "Archive" movies, we're looking to safely and cheaply back up the website databases. And if we're doing that, the best meg/dollar ratio wins. DVD-RAM.

Admins have a source of no cost/low cost media. Thrax - I won't pretend to argue for one format or technology over another. My efforts here are in coordination and fundraising.

Croc: Yeah, trust me when I say that burning movies is far from the list of what this drive is intended for. As Thrax stated, it's purely for archival. I don't care either way. I have a cheap cheap source of DVD-RW and DVD-R media, I'm not sure about DVD-RAM. I'd have to find out. My inclination is to go with DVD-R for now since I KNOW I can get media cheap for it.

I'm going with Thrax on this one.

It's for data archival, and RAM is perfect for that. And I believe the media is cheaper than any other.

Prime, maybe you can enquire about RAM media before we go and spend any money on anything else first....

My vote goes to one of the new multi burners that burn DVD-RAM, CD-R and DVD-R's. They have a new pannsonic that pops off for 125 to 140 all the time on ebay. let me know if you can't find it. DVD-RAM writes faster and rewrites 100,000+ times. It works like a hard disk writing from the outside in. For normal archive stuff its much better then normal DVD stuff and can still burn cd's and normal dvd's for compatibility.

Crap I have now bought 3 older dvd-ram drives that don't write the other formats but read dvd's and cd's for under 30 bucks and for backup activities they are awesome. Mine are older and only do the 5.2gb disks but for 30 bucks??

All three of my servers have them and the most I paid was like 35 bucks and the $31 one included three 5.2gb cartridges. The new dvd ram's write 9.4gb double sided disks also.

At least take a look at dvd-ram multi drives unless all you want is DVD movie copies. The multi's do it all !

I bought two 25 disk spindles of the smaller 2.6gb DVD-RAM tyoe-2 disks for 7 bucks a pop. Whats that like a quarter for 2.6gb of re-writable media? How big are the backups anyway? The bigger ones are more expensice but depending on your needs ??????

Sorry to shoot down the DVD-RAM crowd, but I just got off the phone with a client of mine who is a DVD duplication plant owner and spent 20 minutes talking DVD with him. Yes, he's a total expert in the field.

DVD-RAM is a dying beast, and media is twice as expensive as DVD-Rx. Plus, with 4X out now and 8X down the road, DVD-Rx media will continue to get cheaper. He's willing to just give me DVD-R media (bonus!), so DVD Rx is where it's at from my standpoint. While true that you get more data density with DVD-RAM, we will not even use that excess capacity since no backup will ever be over 4.7gb (at least I HOPE not, and if it is, we are doing REALLY well) and I'll just be shunting them off to a foreigner anyway :)

So, if my vote has any weight, I say no to DVD RAM and yes to DVD Rx (+/-/W/RW/whatever)

You can't go wrong with a Pioneer A05 or A06 then. Maybe the answer is to take Tex's suggestion and try for one of either on Ebay.

With the multi's you get BOTH. Its not one or the other. And you get 100,000 rewrites with dvd-ram. You get cd, dvds, and dvd-ram. And dvd-ram has nothing in common with dvd duplication what so ever. Its as differant as harddisk storage versus floppys really. The purpose of both is totaly opposite.

Do you know anything about the dvd-ram formats available? Or just what one guy told ya in ten minutes? did he mention that the new ones read in a normal dvd? For archival they beat dvd all over the place. Not as a distribution media for a product.... like your client does. But we are talking to differant problems with two differant solutions prime. The modern ram drives also write dvd-r's and cd-r's as well. But for simple archival dvd-ram kicks butt and you give up nothing as the multi's write dvd-r and cd-r as well for compatibility.

Are donations still being accepted/needed for whatever DVD burner we end up with? I'd prefer to donate on Friday if possible (cause thats when I get paid).

Nope, just what one guy told me in ten minutes. But the guy owns a multi-million dollar optical media company, so I'll listen to his ten minutes of wisdom :)

    Biggest factor for me:

FREE MEDIA vs MEDIA I HAVE TO PAY FOR

I already pay money to help run this site, so free==good.

I'm sure that DVD-RAM is amazing, perfect, and sweet. I believe you. But I cannot get free media, plus this is for one-time writes only, not rewrites. I'm writing a backup to it, and then shipping it out for permenant archival. So rewrites mean absolutely nothing to me. I am looking for the best solution for my individual situation, not the best format for backup.

We have MORE than enough money now to cover the purchase. If you feel so warm and fuzzy that you just can't resist going to your PayPal account, then please do so. First though, contact the custodian of the S-M Folding@Home team's Donated Folding Computer project's fund custodian - Seversphere. He'd be elated to receive a donation towards future Folding team folding boxes.

Hope I haven't confused you. No, we aren't in need of more donations for site backup hardware.

Aww... I was looking forward to the chance to donate too...

I suppose I'll take the money I was planning on donating and send it to the SMx fund instead. Money towards the community is money towards the community, after all.
