WD 120gb SATA drive problem

edited January 2005 in Hardware
Hi,
I have been using this drive successfully for the last 9 months and yesterday when I turned on the PC, it hangs when it gets to the Host controller screen where it is trying to detect the drive as Primary Channel.

Even if I set the drive as slave, the PC won't get past that point. Nothing was changed in BIOS.
Am using the Gigabyte 7n400 pro2 Rev 1 board

Does this mean my drive has had it?

could also be a problem with the controller.

make sure you check the cable connections (power as well), and try swapping out the SATA cable.

I have another PC with the same MB in it and will try the drive in that PC as well as swap the cable.

It may be something as simple as a corrupted Master Boot Record on the drive. Plugging it into the other PC is the best bet, then see if the data still exists. Try it as a slaved drive first, then as the master (boot) drive. If you see the data as a slave, but cannot boot from it on the other PC, the MBR is likely corrupt, and a repair from the OS disk may fix it.

The MBR should have nothing to do with it being detected in the bios. It can have nothing on the drive... no MBR no partition no anything and if the drive is OK it should be detected by the bios.

Look at cables and then worry about the drive.

    Thanks everyone for the replies.
I have swapped cables and even tried it in another PC and still it is not detected.

Will buy another one of the same drives and change controller boards on it as I don't believe the physical drive is faulty.
Once I get the data off it then will send back to WD for warranty replacement.
Will keep you up to date.
