i just purchased geil RAM..the dual stick...it wont run in dual channel mode...i also have a shuttle a35n...which do u think is at fault here?? (the computer shuts down out of nowhere when dual channel is implimented..when not...its rock solid)
im asking this becuase my friend is buying a new computer and he wants to do graphics work...since GEiL has cas2 i figure it would be best for him...so i reccommended it to him...now im getting second thoughts about my reccomendations...any input???

Geil has been a notoriously crappy memory manufacturer, often needing more-than-default volts to produce the advertised clock speed.

You get what you pay for with memory.

Stick to Corsair, Kingston, or Mushkin.

I have some GeIL... works just fine.. Does 200MHz (2-3-3-3) @ 2.77V

Bought some for a friend and it blows...

Guess I'm lucky with it, as my 8RDA.

    If that's geil 3200...That's horrible.

Corsair and Kingston do 211 at 2/2/2/6/2/1 at a mere 2.6v

From what I have read on other sites and forums, Geil has got some positive comments actually, hmmm oh well.

Running Geil in both systems at advertised speeds - CL 2.5, 6/3/3. Mushkin, Corsair, TwinMOS? Well, yes, it would definitely overclock better. But that would have cost me about $300 more for these two builds. Worth it? Not to me. BTW, the Geil runs perfectly in both my systems in dual channel mode.

    I don't even mean overclocking.

I mean the pure benefit of having 2/2/2. It's worth getting.

Scratch my timings in the post above.. I looked and they are:

    CAS: 2
    RP: 2
    RCD: 2
    RAS: 3

    That's a GeIL 512MB PC3200 "Ultra" CAS 2, 1T stick in an 8RDA motherboard

I've only had 2 GeIL encounters personally, 1 good & 1 bad. The 10+ reviews I read over 2 months _before_ I bought it were all _very_ good... Often 9 of 10 "Stars".

Reviewers are lying or GeIL is hand picking the review sticks.. and this is what happens because of it.:(

I have some Geil PC3500 here from 07/2002 (bought super cheap 2 X 256MB in another forum early this year). It's awful. I can't get it to run even PC3200, no matter what CAS, in my NF7-S, whether 1 stick or 2, whether single or dual channel. It's rated at PC3500 CAS 2.5 6-3-3 2T on the packaging. Someone wasn't given their medication the day those ratings were approved. For comparison, my Corsair PC3500 runs all day long PC3200 CAS 2.0, dual channel, in the NF7-S. I've also tried it on an Asus P4PE mobo with a 2.6, with similar crappy results.

That said, I can run the Geil just fine in my Granite Bay board but there's only a 1:1 memory ratio - so I can run it dual channel CAS 2.0 but only at DDR 320ish, ie, under PC2700, at whatever maximum FSB overclock the rest of the components (cpu/mobo) will handle.

It's going to depend largely on what RAM chips were used in building the modules. I can't read mine as the heatspreaders are on the Geil such that it would take some rather serious toolwork to remove them so I'm not going to bother. The Geil coding is MGL08UL3264D1TGK-KT (on a sticker on the heatspreader).

Thanks for the input Keto, very interesting. Maybe SM or Icrontic can do a Geil review of some sort to try to put some of these things in stone.

I'll donate my Geil PC3200 2.5 6-3-3 if someone wants to upgrade me with Corsair, TwinMOS, or such! I'm such a philanthropist.

And rock solid in dual channel in my Abit IC7.

AND, it was only $140/Gigabyte - shipped! (At least the 3200 was.)

Was that for 2X512 Leo? In that case, it´s cheap for a "brand" memory. Hower, for $114, you get one of the best sticks around, the HyperX PC3000 512mb. I know several peeps that runs that memory at over 250 FSB at 5,2,2,2 1:1. One of them even runs them at 270 at those timings with lots of volts. THAT is a cheap heavyweight memory.

I have always been around, m8.

You shouldnt have any problems gettind rid of at least 2 of those sticks without to much loss.

A suggestion, for your Canterwood, get 2 sticks of Twinmos with CH5 chips on them. They are hard to get in the states but there is a massive thread in the DD at AMDMB where a guy is selling them. I think he has sold around 200 sticks at least so he is VERY reliable. A brand called Buffalo is supposed to have the Winbond chips on them as well. Twinmos with Winbond chips is as safe as they come. I guarantee that.

Considering the price difference at the time, I do not regret foregoing the Kingston, Corsair, or Mushkin - it was twice as expensive. Overclocking had not been a big consideration for these computers, and still isn't. It's just icing on the cake. Premium RAM at 2GB just wasn't tenable.

    I don't recall seeing any high-performance 3200 DRAM in June at "$114" per 512MB.
"You get what you pay for!"

Indeed I did; and I still think it was a great value.

As a matter of fact, i think most of the mentioned memorys where CHEAPER then if i´m not wrong. Doesn´t matter now though.

You do have good ram for your needs, thats what counts my friend. As a fellow pc enthusiast and a fellow price-hunter, i´m a little annoyed that you could have gotten much more for the same price or better, overclocking or not. Thats all.

Thanks for working with me on this guys, but I am not disappointed with the Geil. My joke about donating the RAM for testing was not whining. :wtf: Sorry, I guess I mislead everyone. I am very happy with the performance of both the Intel and AMD systems in my signature.

I know this is late but.... :)

Several times this past summer (June, July and last week) Bestbuy has been selling Kingston HyperX PC3500 Cas2 512MB for ~$100 AR ($120 - $130 out of pocket)

I paid less for my two 512MB PC3500 sticks than I did for my two 256MB PC3500 sticks :bawling:

Actually the latest sale is still on until this Sat (Aug 23rd) ($131 - $12 rebate = $119)

Third RMA (so that means 4th DIMM) coming from NewEgg on Wednesday for some Corsair XMS PC3200C2. I have 3 good sticks of the stuff, but that last stick has been bad. Hopefully this next stick will work like it is supposed to.

I may plan a trip to BestBuy tomorrow just to check the Kingston out.

The weird thing with HyperX is that their PC3000 stick is just as good. If you can find a PC3000 through Ebay or other 2:nd handed channels, just get them. Memory prices will go up as usual before x-mas and now is the right time to buy memory.

This is just an example of a great deal:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3426507443&category=44937

$100 for a pair of overclocking goodness. Hard to beat.

When I purchased my Corsair about 2 months ago it was $95 and that included shipping. (PC3200 CAS 2 3-3-6)

Now that same memory is $123. Prices have increased drastically the last few weeks.

Mine are 512MB sticks, not 256.
    I purchased 1GB of Corsair XMS PC3200C2 for $190.

A few weeks prior to that I had purchased 1GB of the same but it was like $230 or so.

Ah, that said the 512mb sticks were 85$ at the time.

I would've bought them had 512mb sticks not sucked for nForce2 boards.
