Is the IcyBox cool enough?

edited January 2005 in Hardware
I'm about to buy the NEC 3520a but as I've only got a laptop I'm going to need a 5.25" drive enclosure. I've been looking at the IcyBox enclosures as they look really smart, but it concerns me that there is no internal fan and I'm rather worried about overheating the drive.

Can anyone either suggest a better alternative, or put my mind at rest?

Cheers,

Neil

The fan isn't really a problem, since the drive is sitting outside of the case, it's getting a lot more exposure to ambient cool are than it usually would. The IcyBox has vents on the side, right? If so, then I think it's the same as my Speeze external enclosure (same thing was sold under many brands).

I couldn't find the IcyBox, but does it look somewhat like this? Speeze Metal Gear Box

If so, avoid it. I had one and it just stopped working after about a month.

This is the one I have now, and I don't have any complaints so far: Bytecc Enclosure . It works well and that LED is crazy bright.

garg: it's not getting exposed to cool ambient air sitting inside a fairly airtight box with no fan :p

There are some enclosures that have a fan that goes under the drive rather than on the back. That would probably be your best bet. Lemme see if I can find one.

Well, the one good thing I could say about mine before it died is that it never got hot. Vents on the side, and with the drive in direct contact with the metal conducting the heat away... yeah, not a problem. My new Bytecc one is made out of aluminum, so I'm even less worried about it.

Those little fans in enclosures are too loud for my taste. I used one at work and I was always trying to hide it behind something so I couldn't hear it :D

I vote for the 5.25" bytecc w/ a 40mm fan in the rear..... I have one sitting right here in front of me, and i can't even hear it running. Luckily the fan is not one of those 40mm screamers! It's pretty cheap and it works great for me....

A 40mm wouldn't be so bad, but the 20s in the 3.5" ones can be.
