AMD reports disappointing profits

After dropping a bombshell on investors last Monday that its fourth quarter of 2004 would be a disappointment, AMD formally announced the numbers today.

AMD lost $30m on sales of $1.26bn in the final quarter of the year. Despite processor sales rising 26 per cent over the corresponding period in the previous year, AMD's CEO, Hector Ruiz, said the Flash memory business, on which AMD relies for almost half of its earnings, was "freaking dismal".
AMD shares crashed from $20 to $14.6 on the revelation last week of the poor performance of its flash memory division. AMD blamed intense competition with Intel. Intel has cut the prices of Nor memory aggressively in the past two quarters

Bastard Intel sees AMD winning share in the processor market, so they decide to undercut market prices on flash memory... bastards!

The numbers don't matter, what matters is how the company performs, and everyone knows that AMD processors out perform Intel, so it's all good.

No one wants to do business with a failing company. The numbers do matter, more than you know it.

Unfortunately, the numbers are very, very important. The stock is seen as less attractive, prices fall, less capital is available for investment. If it's only short term, it probalby won't matter much.

AMD was built on flash memory production and sales. It's been one of the major players in that arena since its inception. Flash is the only reason AMD survived long enough to develop the original Athlon processors that put AMD in competition with Intel. Ironically, AMD's first processor forays were based on licensed Intel technology. I think AMD even fabricated CPUs for Intel years ago.

It's been the same thing with AMD for 20 years now. One year they make a profit and the next they don't. If Im not mistaken they have blamed bad performance on flash memory before.
