Hello there,

Windows XP is not reading more then 136 gb for one of my partitions and I was curious if anyone could please point me in the right direction for a dl, or a fix to this issue. I am missing out on 14 gb of HDD space, that I wouldn't mind using.

Thanks,
Alex

    You need to upgrade the BIOS on your mobo or use a PCI IDE controller card.

    Make sure you have at least Windows XP SP1 :) It was the first one in the WinXP Family to support 48-bit LBA.

    //Edit: Typo :rolleyes:

    no, he needs to install XP SP2.

    SP1 doesn't support over 137gb.

    //edit:

    I meant SP1 - SP0 doesn't support over 137gb.

    Yes, I saw you corrected that. I was even told by the instructor that teaches A+ (who is also A+ certified) that only SP2 supports <137 GB but he was wrong. I showed him the following ;D
    Note Windows XP does not support 48-bit LBA support unless you are running Windows XP SP1. If you want to use 48-bit LBA support, you must apply Windows XP SP1 or later.

    Windows XP SP1 includes 48-bit LBA support for ATAPI disk drives. With this support, you can use hard disks that are larger than the current 137 GB limit. By default, support is enabled in SP1. To determine if you are running SP1, right-click My Computer and then click Properties. On the General tab, Service Pack 1 will be listed under "System."

    Hello there,

    I thought I was supposed to DL SP2 also, but I have done that and it still doesn't read the extra stuff, should I flash my BIOS or will that have no effect. I've never flashed my BIOS before so I don't want to do it unless I know it won't screw anything up.

    Thanks,
    Alex

    Your motherboard is new enough that it should currently support your hard drive. What I believe is happening is that when you installed XP (without SP1/2) it wrote the partition as being that big. Now that you have SP2 and the ability to have larger hard drivers, you'll need to update that partitoin. I don't believe XP supports partitioning resizing, so you'll have to use something like Partion Magic. It cost money howerver. There are free trials of Partiton Manager Personal which resizes paritions but I've never used it.

    Maybe someone else will have some better software for you to use. You'll get your extra space soon :D

    it supports it.. you have to enable lba support in windows..

    open notepad and copy in the following.. then save it as lba.reg and double click it, add it to the registry and reboot.

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Parameters]

    "EnableBigLba"=dword:00000001
