Apple Patches 7 Flaws In OS X
It's time for Mac users to pull out their one-button mice and get patching. Yesterday Apple announced a flurry of patches designed to fix a variety of flaws in its flagship OS X operating system and various applications bundled with Macintosh PCs.
Source: GEEK.comAt the same time, Apple announced it is implementing a new naming scheme for patch releases, mirroring the way Microsoft names its patches and hotfixes.
Exploits were discovered in the Safari browser, the Mac Mail e-mail program, and the color-matching ColorSync system. The worst of the problems were in Safari, where a pop-up blocking feature could be subverted to allow malicious activity. ColorSync suffered from a buffer overlow that would allow arbitrary code execution. Mac Mail's flaw allowed remote attackers to glean information about how the PC's Ethernet connection was configured.
Apple blamed the larger-than-average number of flaws on the sharing of applications and code with other platforms. "Apple is using software that's used in other distributions," said Thomas Kristensen of Secunia, an Internet security firm. Kristensen noted that when these other platforms have flaws, "it will affect the OS X platform."
