It's easy to turn that stuff off, just yell if you want help doing it. (Assuming you get your other troubles settled.)
Though, I don't really understand how my new board works yet, my system is running now with the original harddrive, DVD and CD-RW drives. It's really running good now. Even better than when the original board was in it.
I went ahead and took your advice as far as turning off some stuff and now Windows XP looks more like Windows ME and is a whole lot faster. Even the Internet on the Compaq is as fast as the Internet on my homebuilt. I'm planning on turning off other stuff that I don't need as well.
You can find a good guide for disabling unnecessary services at this site.
I'd recommend disabling them one at a time, write down what you did, and test your Internet and network access each time. You don't want to disable fifteen different things at once and end up scratching your head wondering which one messed up something you really would rather have.

I since cancelled DSL and have been told by other computer users that their computers crashed after getting hook up. And others complaineed about how DSL murderously slows their computers down. Since most people have good luck with their DSL's it may be just our setup that is just a very short distance from me in my town.
:bawling:
Something else that I learned after installing my new Foxconn board is that viruses can definitely attack BIOS's. My new board has got build in virus protection. It was hopeless to do anything else with the original board though I was able to get it to boot up on an older O.S. I really like my new board and I had no problems installing Windows XP. Used all my old drives including my DVD drive. But, couldn't use cable select any longer. Had to set the DVD for slave and the CD RW on master and install the software for the DVD. The drives would only work with the jumpers set this way. Also installed virus protection along with a firewall with continuing updates, in case I ever try DSL again.
The only reason I took this DSL is because the woman at SBC wouldn't take no for an answer. And come to find out she lied to me about certain aspect of this DSL service. I filed a complaint over this with DSL thing when I cancelled and sent their stuff back.
However, I'm willing to give a DSL service another chance should another one other the SBC come to town.
