Badass 120 MM case fan

I think I remember someone talking about a really sweet 120 MM case fan back in the "Old" Icrontic days.

I think it was a perfectly balanced fan the gave 100 to 150 CFM but without the noise of most other fans with that output.

Anyone know what I am talking about?

No... but I can tell you that I doubt it exists, because most noise is from the air impacting the fan blades, and to get that much air out of a 120mm fan requires pretty high rotational speeds, which means pretty high noise output... Delta has a 120mm 190cfm unit if you're looking for really high airflow though...

    I could see a 120mm fan being fairly quiet @ 100CFM. 150 is a different story.

100cfm 120mm fans are passably quiet- I've got 4 90-odd CFM 120mm fans... they're not especially quiet, but they tend to fade into the background pretty well. I also have a 131cfm 120mm fan. It's not quiet by any stretch of the imagination.

Perhaps he's talking about the Panasonic Panaflos... :-/

Nah, but I did find a decent one that advertises 79 CFM at around 30 DBA.

It's the Antec All Clear Pro Case Fan 120MM Two Ball Bearing.

Next I have to be brave and cut a hole in the top of my Lian Li PC60 to put it in. Or maybe I should go for the right side panel instead, and put a smaller fan in?

All I can think of is the Rotron...

I think that's what I was thinking of SIM, but in reading the specs on the comair rotron website these are much louder than I thought. Even their whisper line is louder than the Antec one.

HEY! SIMGUY, HOW'D YOU GET MY FANS?!?!?! ;D;D

Mancabus, I've got 4 of those Major DC Rotrons- the 24v fans run of 12v easily, and they're pretty quiet at that voltage too.

LOL I... borrowed them... yes... that's it :D

Ages ago (being Icrontic times) I saved that picture in the hopes that I may one day.. get a set of Rotrons :)

I run Panaflo fluid bearings(called hydrowave) here, bearing hyper quiet and you can buy the CFM you need plus 20% and have what you need for sure. If you avoid blocking them you can get super high flow through case for minimal noise period. they come in 5 ranges per size from Panasonic and are industrially designed 12 volters. Fans need to be run at a minimal rotation to be run at bearing effectiveness, their bearings are designed that way.

Panaflos need only 6 volts to start and stay running. You can reverse rotate them at full RPM rating with an air can and they are no louder after 6-7 cleanings that way than new-- instead, quieter.

Go with what you want, but your fans should be a case lifetime purchase unless case is too full than you need a bigger and better airflow designed case.

In the US, for inflow 120mm fans I use ThermalTake (Tt) 12025A-1B1S's. The -2Bs last longest but wear in noisier for week or two. The -S's stink for noise and cost least. (Same before - model number)They run fixed or with a thermal controller like a Digital Doc 5 and need 6 volts start up current. they pull .45 Amp at 12 Volts max, and they will push a max of 78 CFM each at 34dBa. AFAIK they are 1 Ball Bearing and one sleeve bearing fans that cost me at quantity 5 about $51.00 total including ship as Newegg got Thermaltake to drop ship or got them local to them. 10 days ground from West to Southeast US coast including a weekend.

I have a mid-tower case with one as outflow also, and it works fine and no noisier. Typically I spec cases with 4 80's and no 120's-- two in, two out, and use exclusively Panaflos.

I already have two front 80's and one rear 80, but the air coming out of my PSU(which has 2 80's of it's own) is much warmer than that of the one 80 in the rear.

I think a 120 on the top or close to it would allow for heat that is matriculating there to dump out before going through the PSU.

Then possibly turn the rear 80 around and have the air circulating up out via the 120 instead of out the back, heat rises so I think that would be best.

I had 2 pulled from a Dell server but they were 24v so I never got to use them. They were like 120cfm or something....:bawling:

Blackhawk, you still got 'em? If so, they'll run fine @ 12v...

The YS Tech 120 that cRazyPC sells HERE is actually a pretty decent tradeoff everything considered. In my pre water days I ran one in the floor of my case and it wasn't that bad noise wise for 125cfm. Kinda hums, unlike the whine and growl some other high output fans produce.

The only problem I have with adjustable fans, and this is just me, is that I'd always wind up just turning them up all the way which kinda defeats the purpose.

Hmm, I like the 120 MM adjustable one they have, cheaper than the Antec and blows more air.

I think that is the one I'm going to get.
