I don't have much experience with HSFs, usually just buy whatever's available. Well, my kids' computer just shut off the other day and I just opened it up the other day to discover that the center plastic tab on the processor socket broke right off. Well, my HSF has only the center tab clip. Can you tell me any HSF that has a three-prong clip mechanism so I can get this 1.4 tbird back to folding? :) Thanks!

    SVC.com

    Grab a Thermalright SK6+ ($10 - 60mm), AX7 ($18 - 80mm), SK7 ($20 - 80mm) or SLK800 (~$30 - 60, 70 or 80mm)

    grab a ~30cfm 60mm fan ($5) or a ~50cfm 80mm Fan ($8) also.

What exactly are you looking for? High-performance, quiet, what? And how much did you want to spend? There are a number of excellent heatsinks on the market, but it depends on what you want, and how much you're willing to spend...

Why do you need that connector? Just use a fan with a molex (im sure you have one at home) and stick it in one of the psu´s connectors. If there´s no molex on the fan, create one. A molex with pins costs a heavy 20 cents or so.

If you're looking for cheap & chearful the old taisol heatsinks used to have a three pronged clip. Or you could try Coolermaster Aero 7 or 7+ or their heat pipe cooler. Personally I think the performance of them is not that great.

The best value/performance imho is the Swiftech MCX370-A & -C, quite cheap, excellent quality, good performance & it attaches to all three tabs with the easiest clip system ever. No chance of further breakages.

Personally as one of your tabs is already bust I wouldnt bother going for any of the really heavy hsf unless it mounts directly to the board. eg SLK900 or Alpha Pal 8045.

    Mackanz:

It wasn't the power connector that broke, it was the clip that holds the hsf onto the processor socket.

Thanks guys. I'm just looking for something cheap and simple that will keep my kids playing the nintendo emulator and keep the athlon 1.4 tbird folding 24/7. I really like the $10 price range. :)

The 1.4GHz TBird is/was the hottest running AMD Athlon CPU ever, bar none. I had one, so I've got some experience with cooling it. Running it under 100% load all the time means continuously dissipating around 75w of heat. There are not a lot of heatsinks on the market that can handle that kind of heat load without an absurd amount of noise. You really should spend the extra money on a Thermalright SK-7 (SVC.com has them on sale for $15 each; SALE ENDS TODAY) and a 35cfm+ 80mm fan. My preference for most people is the Sunon KD1208PTB2-6, which is a pretty quiet 80x25mm fan that flows 39cfm.

Trust me though, a cheapo heatsink is not a good idea on a 1.4 tbird...

I'll put in a good word for the Vantec Aeroflow VA4-C7040. Keeps things cool, and has three prong clip.

It's about $34 if bought from newegg though, which is high for HSF's.

Mancabus, I've got an Aeroflow in SVHFH's server (1800+, A7N8X) and it works pretty well, but it's not nearly good enough to justify the price. The only reason I use it is because it was the best heatsink the company that built the comp. had available... for $35, a Thermalright SK7 and a halfway decent 80mm fan would be much better...

That probably is the better way to go, and yes I agree about the price of the Vantec. What you are paying for with that is the TMD fan, I bet the YS Tech people spent a good chunk of change developing that, and are trying to make up the difference by overcharging Vantec for the fan, which drives up the price of the Aeroflow.

I ended up getting a Thermalright SLK-800 and a Sunon 80x25 fan. Thanks for all the responses
