Grand Theft Auto Sparks Another Lawsuit

edited March 2005 in Science & Tech
Rockstar parent Take-Two Interactive, Sony, Wal-Mart, and GameStop are blamed for the murder of three policemen by a teenage car thief.
Just when the furor over Grand Theft Auto: Vice City's "Kill all the Haitians!" level had finally died down, the game sparked another lawsuit. Along with its predecessor Grand Theft Auto III, the crime-action game is being blamed for inspiring the triple murder of three Fayette, Alabama, police officers.

Devin Thompson, 18, is accused of the slayings, which occurred after he was arrested in 2003 for suspicion of the crime of grand theft auto. According to the Associated Press, when he was caught, Thompson said, "Life is a video game. You've got to die sometime." While being booked at the station, he allegedly grabbed a police officer's pistol and then shot its owner and two other officers in the head--all three died. Thompson is then said to have driven off in a stolen police car, but was later apprehended. He is currently being charged with three counts of first-degree murder, and is set to go to trial on July 11.

Two of the victims' next-of-kin have filed a lawsuit accusing the two GTA games as having "trained and motivated" Thompson to commit his crimes. Besides Take-Two, the other defendants named in the near-60-page, $600 million suit are Wal-Mart and GameStop, where Thompson is said to have bought both M-rated games while under the ESRB-mandated 17-year-old purchase age. Sony Computer Entertainment America, makers of Thompson's PlayStation 2 console, is also named in the legal filing.

What is the family thinking? "It's not my baby's fault that he's a triple murderer! It must be those vile video games!"

How 'bout his ****ty parents who didn't instill any morals into the kid when he was growing up? How would they like it if the families of the officers sued them for negligent parenting?

It's not the perpetrator's family who's sueing these corporations, it's the victims' families.

The victims' family sueing makes the situation even more rediculous. You don't see a lawsuit from the defendant's family for a good reason - Mr. Thompson is the only one to blame for his actions. if they didn't know what this f'd up kid said would they have tried to sue the murderer's family for $600 mil for popping out another human waste product?? hell no - but then greed enters the picture along with a team of lawyers and all of a sudden, they have found the source - hallelujah! good coincidence that they can put a $600 million price tag on this incident. WTF has happened to here? A McCarthy-era FCC, rediculous lawsuits, ...the Eagles losing the superbowl... For crying out f'ing loud, you can throw around racial slurs on the air, but "tits" is grounds for a $500,000 fine? I wouldn't be surprised if this suit succeeds and the same stringent rules are applied to video games. Essentially redefining the constituition piece by piece. How does this help? Crazy people aren't going to get any saner. Degenerate parents aren't going to all of a sudden stop taking drugs and having unprotected sex (popping out kids they don't care for). I'm waiting for kids to start jumping off awnings onto people's heads so they can blame it on the influence and training Super Mario Brothers gave them. This crap makes me sick.

Wow, this is once again a tragedy. We need to stop finding blame outside of the source. This happends when no one wants to take the blame for their own actions. Question can we sue Atari for pac-man being responsible for the obesity in this country?
