Ways to use gmail...

I recently ran across some really cool ways to use my 1 GB gmail account as on line storage space.

I am really impressed with the results, so I thought I mwould share with SM.

First Engadget wrote this little tutorial on how to mount your gmail account as a drive in windows explorer.

Keep in mind this method has a 10MB per file limit, but it's still pretty rad.

Then there's this site which allows you to bypass the 10MB per file limit and just upload and download to and from the account as you please.

So I have 3 gmail accounts, which potentially ammounts to 3 GB of free online storage.

I currently have 50 gmail invites, which COULD amount to a heck of a lot of online storage space.

Anyways, if you need a gmail account, pm me your email addy. I will bve more than happy to hook you up.

Enjoy!

I can almost guarantee that google will break this app with an update. I wouldn't rely on it at all.

I don't trust it myself. I mean, knowing my luck I will get my gmail account closed for to much bible music

I dunno if they will change this either. I mean, you can create folders and everything. So it seems like they almost intended this use.

Also they give you a gig. Who says they even care what you use it for.

They have to understand this was bound to happen.

I think they designed the Gig limit with the idea in mind that not everyone was going to fill their gig. If you ask me, it's taking advantage of a well-meaning free offer for e-mail space. If everybody does it, it will make google have to either scale back the free space available to each user, or spend buko bucks on more space for people... Not very nice thing to do if you ask me...

Besides, it's only a Gig, that's not really very valuable. It's maybe two episodes of Star Trek saved in storage. Not worth the extra program on my computer. DVDs hold more, and are even more portable than internet access.

Actually, I think that Google's intent on giving you a gig of storage for your gmail account was to encourage you to never delete a message that's important to you at all. That way, they can more specifically target their advertising to you when they parse all of your email content. Because of that advantage, they can charge the advertisers more, because the advertisements are going to a more custom-tailored market, who will have a higher purchase ratio on the advertised products.

Man... I think I actually learned something in the MBA program!

I didn't think that Gmial actually looked at all of your mail, just the stuff you got that day. Usually, when I notice ads they are only related to the e-mail that is open at that moment.

Gmail does scan and sensor your Email there...

both me and a freind here at work have accounts and we had uploaded some stuff that we needed at home.
well when we got home Gmail had blocked it and deleted it as bad file extension or bad file. possable hacker or virus stuff.......
so you do need to be carefull what you upload.
and yes they have the right to snoop in your account they gave it to you for free so there really is no privacy if you look at it.

so you can use it as storage. just have to be carefull what you store and as what..

I think what this kind of thing would be good for is keeping a cache of all the little utilities and freeware programs you want to have running on your computer. Sure, you could still track them down at the author's site, but after a format it would be handy to be able to go to one place and download them all from there. It would make sending them to your friends a lot easier, too.

Overall, I'm with CBDroege on this one. One DVD with the same data would make the whole process a lot easier.

Yes, exactly. It's too lure users away from Hotmail, Yahoo, and so forth - also to attract others who had previously avoided Webmail at all costs (like me).

Frankly, I have no use for online storage other than email messages. An FTP page/site is one thing, but just storage for storage's sake - can't imagine what I'd do with it. I have a redundant (backup) hard drive in each of my computers, plus another external hard drive that I also use for backups. Everything is available from the internal extra drive and external extra drive. Of course, the DVD copy mentioned above is good too.

You can also PM me your addy, and Ill send you an invite. I have more invites than I will ever use.

Also I will send gmail support an email asking for their official stance on the issue of using their service as a storage medium. I will post their response here.

I will prolly have to wait till tonight to send it as I am at work now, and cant get to gmail.com to find what the support address is.
