Sata

Hey everybody, it's me again

Ok. So Before any of this new fun, I had two hard drives, a 250 gb and a 300 gb. The 250 was partitioned into three, one for Windows, one for a failed Linux install, and one for miscellaneous goodies. The 300 was for movies.

When I came home for Spring Break, I got two 36 gb Raptors so I could RAID them together and speed up the beast. I also got an SATA card because I was running out of room. So long story short, I plug in only the Raptors and correctly set up my RAID 0 and get Windows installed. Piece of cake. Then I plug the other hard drives back in, and screwy **** starts happening. I.e. -

When the Raptors and the other hard drives are on different boards (Raptors on mobo, HDs on card or vice versa) only the last partition on the 250 gb hard drive shows up. The first two disappear and the 300 is gone as well. If I check Disk Management, however, I can see all of the partitions, they just don't have drive labels. Thus I can't access them. btw, the SATA BIOS utility always sees all of the drives when I boot.

When the Raptors and the other hard drives are on the same controller, a la the SATA card, the 300 gb shows up and nothing from the 250 does. I believe I tried Disk Mangement in this setup also and it didn't see anything from the 250 at all.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks guys, you're the best.

Athlon 3200+, NF7-S mobo, Mushkin Level II Black (1 GB), ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS Gamer, dual 36-gb 10,000 RPM Raptor Hard Drives in RAID 0 and 550 gigs internal storage... plenty of love to go around.

-EDIT-

In moving around some extra stuff, I found that if the 250 alone is plugged into the mobo and the others are in the card, the one partition of the 250 and the entire 300 gb drive show up. Since I don't need the other two partitions or any data that are on them, I figure I'll delete them using Disk Management and make a new partition out of their remnants.

Any words of caution before I do so?

Can you post a screenshot of the "Disk Management" window? I don't think you'll need to do anything as drastic as deleting and remaking partitions.

That's the screen after I deleted the two partitions. It became one big unallocated group. Problem now is that it won't let me format it.

Another big pain in the ass has arisen, however. Now, periodically, and that means frequently but not constantly, my computer freezes for half a minute or more at a time. It's really quite angering, cuz it just happened right there. Only thing I can think of is that it's because I changed where the hard drives were attached. I'm going to, if this transfer can finish, start over. Everything will be connected to the SATA card, the 250 gb hard drive will be wiped, and hopefully some magic will happen. Wish me luck guys.

I'll indeed wish you luck. Thanks for the screen shot. I can't see any wrong settings or reads. Sorry, wish I had advice for you. I'm thinking your freeze problem is related to the hard drives/partitions recognition problem.

thats what i told him. sounds like his format went well, except windows is now on H: and nothing was assigned to C:

since I dont think that should cause any problems, I told him to leave it...
