So what will be the next step... (hypothetical)

My next upgrade will be very soon to the PC in my sig. I probably won't upgrade again for about a year, and that will definitely be the last Socket A PC I buy.

So what's next? What will be the rage in a year? Socket 940,939,754? AGP 8X or PCI Express?

What do you guys think, hypothetically speaking, will be the equivalent purchase 1 year from now to the nForce2 Ultra and Barton 2500+ combination?

Unless plans change I think it will be Socket 939 and PCI Express (as TOP DOG) though I don't think AGP 8X will be gone.

As for replacing the Barton 2500+?
You mean compared to a 3200+ or compared to value/performance/overclockability?

If you mean 2500+ as in (nice, but not high-end) then I think maybe a 3700+ or even 3900+. If we're talking value/performance/overclockability then I think probably a 3100+ or 3300+.

But that's just speculation. I surely don't know

I mean like the 2500+ in the sense that it will easily OC past the top dog in the product line... ;)

The Current Opteron/Athlon64 are .13 micron. Whatever is the lowest .09 micron CPU will be the Overclockers choice.

    Overclocking champions!
    1600+ Palomino (.25)
    1700+ Thoroughbred (.13)
    2500+ Barton (.13)

I think there's a lot of room to grow with the A64 architecture at .13 micron... seems like with all the trouble Intel is having with .09, it might not be worth it to transition while silicon is still the base for processors...

A couple musings about a year from now:
Whatever is the lowest .09 micron CPU will be the Overclockers choice.

If Intel pulls this off soon enough, AMD will again have to play catchup at the high end.

If AMD doesn't grab more market share overall, and if lucrative cash flow doesn't come from Opteron corperate sales, AMD will be called IBM in a year.

A year from now? Hmm. Eyes are on Opteron, definitely.

    Opteron 24x (Maybe 25x?)
    nForce3 PRO (Guessing?)
PCI Express NV40 (Middle of next year)

I was thinking more along the lines of PCI Express R420...
