I found a nice article explaining the physics and graphics.
Instead, Ensemble Studios licensed the Havok physics engine. The art team cut each building up into logical pieces of debris. Then, when a structure gets slammed by a cannonball, chunks of it part way (leaving ruined holes and broken slats underneath) and fly through the air. No two explosions are the same. If you hit a town hall, the steeple might pop up and crumple to the ground, or it might go whirling off and down the street, depending on how the cannonball hit it.
Those do look pretty damned good. This will get me back into RTS games again. I absolutely love the age of empires series. I won't want to conquer anything because they look so damned good. I hope it runs on my laptop.
Wow, and I bet the AI is amazing too. I learned a lot about the AI for the AoE 1 and 2 at University, and some of the advances they made from 1 to 2 were spectacular - so I reckon 3 will be awesome.
Screenies look good, but I reckon the latest games are made more realistic with lifelike physics. With HL2 having such thought put into realistic physics, and now AoE 3, I think its the way forward.
It's my dirty little secret, but I still play AOEII (the Conqueror's Expansion) more than any other game. Way more.
After The Age Of Mythology (not my cup of tea) came out, I figured that was about the end of the line for the series. This has made my <s>day</s> <s>week</s> <s>month</s> YEAR!
I read the preview in PC Gamer and it looks freaking awesome. They said they have one guy who has been working since development no just the water!. The game seems to be going on a different idea then the normal "Ages" concept. It's hard to explain but if you can find the December issue of PC Gamer, the preview is worth the read.

I still play AOEII (the Conqueror's Expansion) more than any other game aswell. I do play AOM quite a lot too though, however I understand why people don't like it as much.
I'm really looking forward to AOEIII. I caught some screenshots a couple of months back, and they do look great.
I could never get the hang of it. I build up my 'village' to a nice size then 10,000 sword wielding idiots come charging at me and wipe me out. Thinks, I'll do the attacking. I take my army on a rampage and 10,000 sword welding idiots come charging at me and wipe me out, again!
These types of games are really just a version of the old Rock/Paper/Scissors game. The whole trick is to figure out which types of units are most effective against others.
After that, it becomes a matter of getting enough practice to be efficient in building up your resources so you aren't overwhelmed by sheer numbers.
I do well against the computer in games like this, but playing online on a random server usually isn't any fun (although I'm sure playing with you guys would be). Seems like whatever the RTS game, people gravitate towards unrealistic maps with tons of resources, and the person with the quickest mouse-clicking finger (poised over the "create unit" icon on the barracks) wins.
I would be up for some AoE II as well... I'd have to dig out my copy of the game and practice up a bit, but it could be fun playing with the S-M guys...

We might have to try and set up a little head-to-head action sometime.
Anyone else up for a go?

THIS GAME LOOK SAWEET! Kinda reminds me of Guild Wars style graphics
About the "playing" part, I mean. It's not like I'd enjoy clobbering you or anything.
(You'll probably smear me...)
