My comp suddenly froze last night and started giving me issues... all is fine now except for my sound. My computer just doesn't want to let me play any sounds... when i try to play anything from winamp i get a "directsound output v2.2.6 error" then says please install proper drivers...
any help please?

I am running XP and i have a hercule fortissimo III..

I already tried uninstalling the soundcards's drivers and reinstalling them... also when i go to control panel> sounds and audio devices... says there is no audio device.

Try system restore or a repair installation.

No, System restore just set your system to a time before something bad happened. Since it happened in the last day, you can roll your system back maybe 3 days. You won't loose anything.

I personally have it disabled, and have never used it. I prefer to completely reinstall over doing whatever system restore does.

That fact that your computer froze and now that the card doesnt show up at all, sounds more like the card has actually come loose from the socket or has somehow become damaged. Try re-seating it before you do anything else.

Definately sounds like a hardware issue. You could have a malfunctioning PCI slot (for whatever reason), which is preventing your system from detecting your sound card.

Try removing your sound card, restarting, shutting down and reseating your card back into the same slot.

If that doesn't work and you have a free PCI slot, try moving the card to another slot to see how that fairs out...

Maybe the sound card died. Check the card to see if you can see burn spots or try it in another computer. Also, try another sound card in your computer.

Easy now guys... Lets try and get the sound problem fixed. :)

I'd also suggest trying the sound card in another computer to determine whether or not the unit still works. I had a GeForce 3 malfunction in a system today that kept giving me wierd blue flashes across the screen (like someone was inserting a completely blue frame in one of the 60 frames rendered per second).

By sticking the card in another computer and listening to the Award BIOS beep code (1 long, 2 short), I learned that the card was defective.

If the card doesn't work in another PC, it's time to think about your options for a new sound card (or use your onboard sound, if you have the option).

How long has it been since you formatted and did a clean install of windows? I'd say that may be a good option right about now, and if it's been more than a few months since you've last done it, it'd be a good idea to do it anyhow...

Does the card show up in the device manager?

Does the SB card play sounds or not, as this error can be ignored if the sound works.

The only way I fixed the devcon32.dll thing was to reinstall windows, it's a sad, sad driver problem. I had cleaned the registry deleted every single creative file on my system, and that was the only solution.

The old card did... not the new one.

What if i do a system restore?

What if i just reinstall windows on top of my current install? I've done that quite a few times.

It's called a repair installation. You boot with the cd and after a few steps it searches for installed os and it asks if you want to repair it. I may be wrong but if I am it clearly states in one of the steps if you want to repair.

He may just have, or be remembering 98 or ME where you could easily re-install over the top, but still.....

Doing a system restore and/or reinstalling over windows isn't a real good way to do things. It's basically the half-ass way... It may or may not fix the problems, because windows may or may not replace all it's critical files. The correct way to repair windows is to back up all your files to a 2nd partition or disk, format and reinstall.

I have the HD split between with windows/program installations on one.. and all other files on the next... guess i reformat it over the weekend.

Another thing- before you reformat, d/l all the newest video, sound, chipset, etc. drivers and put them on that 2nd partition. That way you don't have to dig out all your install CDs and you get the latest version of the drivers...

Yeah the card sure as hell did something...

I reinstalled windows with my old SBLive... wouldn't detect it... not even my printer, omly video card. Wuggaroo took over and long story short.. wouldnt boot anymore.
Alright so i take over and put in a new HD. Installed windows and everything... once service pack1 installed... just wouldn't boot anymore.. on top of that it only recognizes 256 ram instead of 512. Comps just sitting off, because well i give up. Ordering a new comp, end of story.

Before you cough up the money for an entirely new computer, replace just the motherboard. It sounds like the board is on it's way out.
