Short Media migrating to new server tonight (around midnight EST)

That's right, the time has FINALLY come. We will be moving the site to the new server at some point tonight. Downtime should be very minimal. If you get any weirdness, this is why.

Oh, and for once the time will be right ;D

    Maybe it was in the other thread and I'm just retarded. But what prompted this? The old server can't keep up anymore, or what?

    Okay, let's put this into perspective:

    short-media - around 40,000 visitors a day
    short-media - ~200 active users at any given time on the forums
    short-media - ~2gb mySQL database

    current server - Intel P3/1000
    current server - 512mb PC100 SDRAM

    new server - dual opteron 850s @ 2.4ghz/e
    new server - 1gb PC3200 ECC REG DDR per processor (2gb total)
    new server - 64bit OS, 64bit database engine, 64bit webserver

    Hah! Awesome. Both that we're getting that much of a kick of an upgrade, and that the old server could keep up is amazing. :eek:

    Why was there so much time in between the purchase and actual activation of the server? Installation/debug/testing/etc?

    Well the purchase was staggered due to cost. We couldn't get all of it in one go, nothing everything was kindly given to us :)

    There are a lot of complications going all 64bit... You'll see when you read the article.
