WMP 9 locks up during video playback

Odd behavior. I play a few seconds of video, and the amount of time varies, then MP locks up. Sometimes sound continues, sometimes not. I am not able to access any other apps until several seconds later when the video unfreezes, plays a few more seconds, then reoccurs. I've set the buffer in MP to be automatic, closed all open apps., and also stopped folding, all ineffective.

GeForce3, recent drivers.
W2K, SP4
8MB Cache HDD,
512 MB system memory.

I ought to have the horsepower to do this! Unsure when exactly this started, or if it affects certain file types more than others. Unsure if just music is an issue as I use WinAmp for MP3.

Advice?

WOW.... I seem to have the feeling that this is an OS problem. I would think about backing up and wipe it clean and reinstall Windows. Sorry, WMP freezing in of itself is tough to diagnose. Let me think about it....

The system WAS rebuilt onto a new HDD within the last 3 months, there is not a lot of cruft there.

Try a new codec pack. I use nimo, or the kazaa lite codec pack

Cool player, and I was able to hop around inside the file (FF, REV, etc), with no issues.

Yes, the QuickTime alternative is a decent player. It plays .mov format as well as most of the other common formats. Thanks, I removed QuickTime from my system.
