About 18 months ago I built this machine for my daughter and her friend.

CPU - AMD “Barton” XP2500+
Motherboard - Asus A7N8X-X (NF2-400)
Memory - 2 X 256MB Kingston Value Ram (512MB), PC3200
Video Card - BFG Nvidia GeForce FX5500, 290/256/128 /
Windows XP Home Edition

They are finding that the current video card is not up to the task with newer games - not exactly a surprise (it was a budget decision when the computer was first put together). We are looking for a new card, but don't want to spend more than $150.

I'm thinking a GeForce 6800-class card would fit the bill nicely. What are your recommendations for the best card for around $150 or less?

What do you think of this Radeon 9800Pro, or this? Yeah, I know, the best mid-range cards are somewhere in the Nvidia 6800 lineup, but not for $150 or less. Or am I wrong?

Your first thougts are right on target sir! A 6800 np is possibly the best bang for the buck right now. Some can even be modded to a 6800GT relatively easy to make the bargain even better. Forget any thoughts of 9800's for now as they are quickly disappearing into the dust.

The 6600 GT is faster than the 6800 np believe it or not. Newegg has one for $149 after a $15 MIR!
