Athlon64 Release date-- Surprise!!!

Geeky, in my own wayNaples, FL Icrontian
On September 23rd, Monarch Computers in Georgia will have Athlon64's in stock AND be shipping that day or very shortly thereafter. They are taking email and telephone pre-orders, and as an AMD Platinum partner they often scare me about how right to the day they are about things. Expect pricy chips with the Athlon64's, OEMs are bidding for them also with partnership contract buying negotiations and supplies are expected to be very limited for a while.
I think I would myself go for an Intel P4\3.0 GHz 800 FSB CPU first, at $391.00, but within one year will be into an Opteron 846 or better (yes, the 8-ways are hitting the US marklet also very very shortly ).
If I run on, will be told to keep it SHort (descending letters ok???), so this is my news-mouthful on the CPU front for now.
John.

With $600.00 changing hands for one of these puppies, I'd want to purchase from a reputable online dealer (ie NewEgg), or something local.
Details on that are a little sketchy at this point.
IMO - Why would you need a castrated Socket 940 (939) when the Opteron 1xx isn't dual capable anyway.....(or is it modifyable?)
You can equal Monarch's reputation, but you can't surpass it. Pricey? Yes, and no. You just have to comparison shop. They are indeed high in some areas; they can be competitive too.
I've purchased online with them and at their store in Atlanta. Their service, before and after sale, is excellent.
Because maybe you wont have to use ECC RAM if it has a different memory controller on it.
