Being both old and blind, I run mine at 800x600

Yeah, I hear ya. I'm an 800 x 600 man myself. That's on all my 17" and my 19" studio Princeton. I am on the monitor way more than is healthy. What can I do.

One rant though, I don't know how it is with other apps but it seems that 800x600 support is omitted by some music software
developers. Most notably iZotope and Native Instruments. It has actually been enough for me to not buy one of their progs. I don't like having to change res for one plug in. Is this a growing trend?

Normally as long as the resolution is detected and selectable in display manager, it should be selectable in games. Works for me, even stupid resolutions in old games such as 840x634 in Total Annihilation.

Try adding the res to the current monitor driver using nvTweak or Rivatuner.
