Lapping my PAL 8045

I've been to store after store--Hardware and automotive. I cannot find 2000 grit sandpaper; 1500 grit is the best I can find. I've sanded the base of my PAL 8045 (you could see and feel the machining) but it's not a mirror finish . . . almost, but not. Anyone know where to get some 2000 grit, or better, sandpaper?

1500 grit is plenty fine enough for your 8045; you don't need to get it finer than that. I wouldn't put it on a machine though as it would be too easy to gouge dips in the surface, defeating the purpose of lapping it. Get you a sheet of plate glass. I use a piece of glass plate 1/4" thick that a friend had cut for a fish tank side that ended up being too thin for the tank.

I used my counter top in the bathroom. I don't know what it's made from, but it's stone-ish and extremely smooth. I figured that would be the closest thing to glass I had available.

It's pretty close . . . the feel of the machining was gone after I had used 1000 grit sandpaper on it, so the 1500 feels like glass, it just doesn't look like a mirror. I guess I'll just leave it, unless someone can tell me where to find some 2000 grit.
/me does want that mirror finish :D

If you feel that you must, Go back to the auto store and get some rubbing compound. It is a paste with very fine abrasive in it.
But don't worry. A wet finish with 1500 on a very flat surface will be fine.

I'm in the same dilemma, not able to find the 2000grit stuff. The 1500 wet sanded seemt to feel way better than the factory finish, so I'm gonna stick with that.

Anything beyond 600 is really excessive. 1500 is overkill, but better to be more than you needed than less...

1500 just doesn't quite cut it for that amazing mirror finish. It's close, but just not there. My SLK-900U has a mirror finish and it's like "wow" and I want that on my PAL8045 too. :D

(Anyone else experiencing site slow-down? This place is like a SLUG!)
