James Doohan, the burly chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise in the original "Star Trek'' TV series and movies who responded to the command "Beam me up, Scotty" died Wednesday. He was 85.

Doohan died at 5:30 a.m. at his Redmond, Wash. home with his wife of 28 years, Wende, at his side, Los Angeles agent and longtime friend Steve Stevens said. The cause of death was pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease.

In 1973, [Doohan] complained to his dentist, who advised him: "Jimmy, you're going to be Scotty long after you're dead. If I were you, I'd go with the flow.

"I took his advice and since then everything's been just lovely."
Rest In Peace Scotty.

Aww, that makes me sad. :bawling: I'm a long-time Trekkie, since the original series first came out. :(

I heard about this earlier this morning. What a crappy thing to wake up to :( RIP

The only Star Trek I've ever really enjoyed was the first series. The other ones are just so-so in my opinion (even with Shatner's bizarro talking).

Really a neat guy. A WWII hero and prolific actor, even outside of his Star Trek role.

Yep. He should be remembered for more than just his contributions to nerddom. It's sad to know he's gone.

I knew he'd be the next to go. Sounds a bit morbid that statement, but he's been ill for a very long time. It broke my heart to see him hardly being able to speak in an interview a couple of years back. :bawling:

He not only inspired a generation of engineers, he inspired a generation of science.

I pay my respects here in this thread.

Rest in peace Mr Doohan. I'm glad you got that star.

    Sad he's gone. :(

Glad he left a personality stamp in the science fiction series that made science fiction mainstream.

Ahh Scotty you'll be missed - I usually repeat the quote bellow to new engineers I hire on how to deal with non technical management

Scott: "Do you mind a little advice? Starfleet captains are like children. They want everything right now, and they want it their way. But the secret is to give only what they need, not what they want!"
LaForge: "Yeah, well I told the captain I'd have this analysis done in an hour."
Scott: "How long would it really take?"
    LaForge: "An hour!"
Scott: "Oh, you didn't tell him how long it would *really* take, did you?"
LaForge: "Well of course I did."
Scott: "Oh, laddie, you've got a lot to learn if you want people to think of you as a miracle worker!"

(Quote is from "Relic" Season 6 STNG - )

His ashes are going to be launched into space.

Interesting snippit was his injuries from the war - he was in the D-Day assault:

"At 11:30 that night, he was machine-gunned, taking six hits: one that took off his middle right finger (he managed to hide the missing finger on screen), four in his leg and one in the chest. The chest bullet was stopped by his silver cigarette case."

God speed you on your next journey where no man has gone before ...
