About $45, will do 2.3GHz on air cooling, maybe 2.4 or 2.5 if you're lucky. I'm also sure someone's going to come along and say a 2500+, you can listen to what they say, but 9 out of 10 times the 1700 and the 2500 get the same speeds, 2.23-2.35GHz...And the 2500+ is $30+ dollars more.
Cool, is the NForce2 Boards still the best? Which version should I look into? I see IGP, MCP, Ultra 400, and normal 400 series in the newegg.com quick search area.
Or you can go to excaliberpc.com and receive a guaranteed stepping for about $15 more, which is still less than the 2500+, which benchmarks identically to the 1700+ save a few rare programs.
Excaliberpc.com is some good people to deal with too. The first time I ordered from them, they didn't have too many ratings at resellerratings.com so I made it hard on them by calling them and made them open an account and take my order over the phone and they came through with flying colors. I just ordered an Antec True Control 550 and a cheap ATI vid card from them today. The pos psu in my nforce2 rig has really crappy rails and I have to RMA my 9700 Pro, so I needed a backup vid card. Believe it or not, they beat newegg on the psu by around $15 and the vid card was the same price(shipped) as newegg.:D
The Tbred 1700's from these folks is a good way to go, as well as a Barton 2500. As far as a mobo goes for AMD, it's hard to recommend anything but the NF7-S 2.0, since they overclock so well. If you decide to go the 1700 route, be sure to get a DLT3C proc with a default 1.5v vcore as they overclock better than the 1.6v 1700's.
No, because all existing 2500+ are rebadged 3200+ from what I've seen.
I wouldn't bother paying the $40 more if I were you, I'd just order a 1700 from newegg, and if it wasn't the right one, RMA it and wait 3 days. Most likely it will be the JIUHB/DLT3C as there aren't many of any other kind left. All told you're out a pithy $5 for shipping the chip back on RMA, instead of $35 because you have the "omfg-I-hope-I-get-the-right-stepping" jitters.
As for motherboard:
Abit NF7-S 2.0. I urge you not to bother considering another board, none of the others hold a candle to this bad boy.
//EDIT:
Just take note that excaliber has painfully slow shipping on their standard shipping; 5 days or so.
Ordering a 1700 from newegg is a crapshoot, I ended up getting 4 (out of 4 )Tbred A's from them, the last of which I RMA'd back to them. Get a guarranteed stepping from excaliberpc if you go for the 1700.
Problem I see with the 1700+ is that the cache is 256K, and the Barton 2500 has 512K which from everything I have been told and seen is a big difference.

On some things it seems to help a bit and other things you really don't notice much speed difference. I did notice that my 2500 seemed to fold a little faster than the 2100 I had in the same setup previously, at approximately the same clock speed.
im nto going against what thrax and mud have said...iV heard from many reliable sources that the 1700+ does OC VERYYYY well.. but it might just be me...i would go with the 2500+ AND oc IT TO A LITTLE OVER 3200+ SETTINGS....but yet again that me...u will in fact get more mhz with the 1700+...why not get both and do a bench for short-media??
I just recently ordred a t-bred 1800+ and I can get it to 2.3Ghz. Reason I got the 1800+ was that it is for a bussiness machine and I wanted a HSF and it was $3 less than a 1700+ retail. Of course I had a little o/c fun first. I got it up there with a vantec TMD. I like having the extra cache though. If money is important go for the 1700+. If you can spare the extra cash, go for the barton.
hAHA @ Get both! It's called money and is why I have beens emi careful in saying I "may" get a new CPU. So far it doesn't look good becuase I am needing new RAM as is, but with a AMD CPU I will need the CPU and motherboard.:(
you could always go with a shuttle AN35N-Ultra. I'm running that with the 1800+ now. with a 200Mhz FSB you can easily get 2200Mhz. I would have to update the bios to get 11.5, 12, and 12.5 multi's. You also need decent quality RAM since the Vdimm only goes up to 2.7V. However, the mem scores are right on par with the Abit. My dad is running a Barton 2500+ @ 3200+ speeds and Geil PC3200 Value @6-3-3-CL2.5 at 2.7V and it's stable.
Not only am I getting that, but while I was at amazon, I checked out Band of Brothers, and World at War.
All together cheaper than a system upgrade and at the same time, off the top of my head, about 50 hours +/- of Content, I am leaning for more than50 though! HAHA
But that's off topic I want to get Patton on DVD( to replace my VHS one) and also get Glory, The Civil War, We Were Soldiers, and maybe Windtalkers, but I suppose 50 or so hours of ocus is enough for now

Oh, I also forgot to mention the cold air intake duct I rigged up to get 60*F nighttime air into the tornado to get it stable @ 2.51GHz...

You do the math.
So if I buy a 1700+ I am risking getting a ****ty CPU :P

"Do it right; or just don't do it."
Maybe when I am done with school and have a good job, I will get me a super computer Thanks anyways.
