AnandTech is at IDF, and according to them Intel will debut the p4ED 1 week before the Athlon 64 makes its debut. The p4ED will have 2MB of L3 cache but other than that it should be the same as the other recent p4s--512KB L2 cache and 800MHz FSB.

    The Inq: <a href="http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=11576&quot; target=_blank>Pentium 4 Extreme Edition</a>

WHEN, AT today's IDF opening, Louis Burns demonstrated a high-definition video stream running on a "mystery" desktop processor, everyone must hve thought it was the upcoming Prescott part. Wrong! It was the (also upcoming), previously unheard of, even at The Inq, Intel® Pentium® 4 processor Extreme Edition 3.20 GHz , with an extra 2 Megabytes. In Intel's own words, "this new processor will be targeted at high-end gamers and computing power users."
    .
    .
    .
However, this doesn't seem to be a new CPU in reality - after all, Intel is doing very well with its XeonMP 2.8 GHz 2 MB cache CPU, and how much effort does it really take to repackage it for the 3.2 GHz / 800 FSB desktop with less stringent thermal and reliability requirements than the big iron, anyway?

    <a href="http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=11576&quot; target=_blank>more here</a>

Would it really give it much performance increase?

Putting extra cache on your processor is like sleeping with your-- ah, never mind.

That's weird, cause, I have an opteron sitting here on my workbench that has a 1 GIG L3 cache.

Oh wait, that's system ram. Oh wait, it's L3 Cache..

I sure hope Intel continues to piss away all of their superior market share by bleeding the P4 for what little more its worth until long after AMD whups up all over their arses with the 64 bit architecture...
