system restore-can't create restore point

I have Windows XP Pro and was exploring the "system restore" function. I note that System Restore is on (the box beside "turn off" is cleared), but the most recent restore point is Oct 14, 2004. So, I tried to manually create a new restore point. I typed in a name ("now") and clicked "create" and got this error message, "System Restore is not able to create a restore point. Please restart the computer, and then run System Restore again." I did restart and etc. and I still got the same error message. I also have Norton System works. I have disabled Norton GoBack because I have a backup drive and periodically run Norton Ghost manually to copy my main drive to my backup. Is Norton somehow disabling System Restore? what can I do to enable it?

System Restore is probably turned off in "Services". Here's how to turn it on:

    - Click the Start Button
    - Click Administrative Tools
    - Click Services
    - In the long list of services, in the left column, right click on "System Restore Service"
    - In the middle of the window that opens is a field, 'Startup Type". Go to the check mark on the right to open the drop down menu options. Select "Automatic".
    - Near the bottom of the window is a field, "Service Status". Click the "Start" button.
    - At the bottom of the window, click on "OK".

This will turn on System Restore and ensure it runs whenever your computer is in operation.

Still unable to create a restore point.

Thanks Leonardo, I did everything you said. Now System Restore status is "on" and startup type is "automatic", BUT, I still can't create a restore point. I typed in a title for the restore point ("now") and clicked "create" and got this error message, "System Restore is not able to create a restore point. Please restart the computer, and then run System Restore again." And, I restarted and tried again and still got the same error message.

Try cleaning up the registry with Ace Utilities, then reboot and give it another shot. :)

Hey Prof, concerning the software you recommended:

I know YO and have a pretty good understanding of her computer software and hardware abilities. She's above average, definitely not down in the AOL class. ;D (No offense to any of you eight or nine AOL subscribers who actually do know what you are doing.) Well anyway, I'd call her an intermediate user. How does Ace Utilities compare to RegEdit? I use RegEdit all the time but I'm an advanced user. The wrong selections in RegEdit could cause headaches. I just wouldn't want to recommend to my sister a cure that's worse than the disease.

ACE is more of a general cleanup tool, as opposed to RegEdit where you are targeting specific entries.

Lots of System Restore problems are due to glitches in the registry. When Windows can't successfully back the registry up (often due to phantom entries it "thinks" should be there) it simply gives up.

    It won't do any harm, and it's a 30-Day free trial. :)

YO, Prof knows his stuff. You might want to try this software - just Ghost your primary (C:/) drive/partition first.
