All laptops use the same standard interface - 2.5" IDE

Any laptop hard drive will work.

Dont' know if there are or aren't SATA laptop hard drives. What if any, would be the advantage over an IDE?

I was just looking on Hitachi's website and I see they do make sata notebook drives now. I imagine they are just using a pata>sata interface with the pata drive, looking at the specs on the 7200 rpm models.

If you got the bucks for it, the 7200 rpm Hitachi drives are sweet, Gnome.

what does that have to do with taking it out to look at the plug on it? It's not gonna erase the HD

It's pretty simple to remove the HD on most laptops. Usually you take out a single screw and pull the whole thing out, glance at it, and then put it back in. It should take about 3 minutes...
