Software to help clean up your computer?

edited August 2005 in Science & Tech
Hey everyone! I was wondering what [free] software is out there to help clean up your computer of all the invalid registries, unused files, et cetera?

I used to have a really, really nice one, but when I redid my harddrive i forgot to write it down so I could redownload it. Right now I have EasyCleaner, but I know there are better programs out there.

I just want to tidy up my computer, get rid of the uneccessary things, and the excess things that are not used.

I appreciate any help! :D

RegCleaner is for you! (ooh, that sounds like SPAM) Let's try again: Jess, go here and download RegCleaner. Be careful as you go, only clearing what you know that you don't want on the hard drive. As you become more proficient, you'll find more junk to zap. I've been using RegCleaner for ages. It's good stuff, and free, just as you requested.

Thanks! I downloaded it, but I'm not sure what I can get rid of or not, so I just got rid of some of the things i know I REALLY didn't want, like yahoo toolbar, companion, et cetera.

Yes, exactly. Start with stuff you are sure about.

I use a program called ccleaner (aka crap cleaner). You can analyze your system and it will display what it will delete and how much space you are freeing up. Great to use after you clean a system of spyware to help get rid of any possible traces in the temp files. I have been using it for months now and love it. Give it a try!

I have been using Cleanup latley ( link )and it seems to work pretty good. It gets rid of temp files , cookies , mru lists and a bunch more. Coupled with a good reg cleaner ( as noted above ) it works great.

Another recommendation for ccleaner here - crap cleaner works pretty well.

Okay, I downloaded ccleaner and it cleaned out my computer and now a lot of my webpages are displaying really funky. Like, without all the images and stuff, just the basic basic things. Some of my forums I'm at I cannot even post a new post.

Something happened, and I'm not sure. I restored my computer back to yesterday, before I DLed ccleaner, and it's still doing it.

    Any ideas?

Nevermind, I fixed it. I redownloaded mozilla firefox and it fixed it somehow.

I just get a new hard drive, set the old one to SLave, and reload the systems and stuff I use.
