Tech Report reviews the Hitachi 500GB 16MB Cache Sata II Hard Drive
Storage would be pretty stagnant if additional gigabytes were all new hard drives had to offer, but there's more to the Deskstar 7K500 than its copious capacity. The drive also comes equipped with a generous 16MB cache, as well as support for 300MB/s Serial ATA transfer rates and Native Command Queuing—all the bells and whistles you'd expect from a high-end drive. But does it have enough punch to keep up with the latest from Maxtor, Seagate, and Western Digital? Read on to find out.
The first hard drive I ever bought was 40MB and $450.....we've come a long way!

I remember the first time I heard of a 20GB hard drive, I thought holy crap, that's massive, it'll never get filled up. Now I hear about a 500GB hard drive and I think hey, I could fill that up in a couple weeks. I guess in a couple more years Terrabyte hard drives will start becoming common place.

Lot of data to lose in a head crash! I've got a 20 GB that is nearly full, and an 80 GB with about 29 GB open on it.

I've wondered why nobody has made two drives in one unit. Sort of instant raid.

That's modern! The first drive I bought was a 3.5GB at $269 at a discount store. The 5GB was just way too expensive. That was after my piece of junk Packard Bell had spit out one after the other two bad 1GB Conner Peripheral hard drives. Oh yeah, and that 100MHz Pentium was a screamer, too!

    That was 40MB not 40GB. Heck I had a 400MB HDD once.
