Which came first? MAC OS or Windows OS?

I am sure Windows 3.1 was the first ever operating system to come out on the market but I want know to for sure if it was the first operating system in terms of colour display etc.

The windows based GUI was first started by Xerox, which was copied by Apple, and then copied by Microsoft. There were also several versions of Microsoft Windows before 3.1, including 3.0, 2.0, and even 1.0.

As far as the "first" OS, that would be a little difficult to draw the line between what is firmware, and what is an OS on the older machines (pre-x86, which is before my time for the most part). I know it'd be command prompt based, (like DOS) though.

For posterity, here is installing Windows 1.0 through Windows 7.

Unfortunately, the creator found religion and does not plan to include Windows 8 & 10.
