Slow IBM Laptop

Brutalboy99

My IBM Laptop is running very slow and hard drive keeps churning.

IBM r40, running Windows XP Pro

I have run Norton Antivirus, MS Antispy, Spybot, Adaware, Ewido, and Clean-up. All have found some things which they corrected but still have issues. CPU utilization with nothing running varies, 50, 75, 90%. I have also run Norton Speed Disk and have about 10% fragmentation. I am pasting my Hi-Jack log. Any help or ideas is most appreciated.

Ok, thanks for the update. I just completed running Ad-aware ver 1.06, and Spybot ver 1.4. As instructed I'm copying the latest HJT log. Thanks for all the help. I appreciate it.

Thanks for the quick response. The quick answer is no. The laptop is continually running at high CPU usage with no applications running. It runs anywhere between 65-95% and constantly. My desktop Dell that I am currently running with 4 applications running is using 2-4% CPU. I'm baffled by this?

I did look at MSCONFIG and it shows 3 startups but no application name. I'm attached a copy of the screen shot. Also when I just rebooted this machine my WinPatrol caught a change to my startup, I think it was the sidesearch app.

Any other thoughts on this? Thanks again for your help any any insight you can provide.

Hi,
Lets do this first:

Download Ewido Security Suite

• Install ewido security suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
  • Install background guard
  • Install scan via context menu
• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
• You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
• The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
• Now, scan with it by clicking 'Scanner' on the left and choosing 'Complete System Scan'

Next, scan your PC with Panda Activescan and save a log/report at the end.

If you can take a screenshot of the Processes tab in Task Manager when maximised and post it here, that would be great.

Post a new HJT log along with the Panda report and screenshot if possible

OK, I have removed the checked items you recommended. I have updated Adaware 1.6
and Spybot 1.4 and ran those. They removed the usual spyware, although everytime I run them they seem to return, which I know is what this exercise is about. It seems the HUNTBAR spyware never gets deleted. I have this on my other computers as well. although it doesn't seem to effect performance. Also, once we get this system looking good I would like a recommendation on how to keep it clean. I appreciate the help you guys do, I know you do it for free so thanks again. Just for the record I use Norton Systemworks Antivirus, AVG antivirus, Spybot, Adaware, MS Antispy and make sure the updates are current but still get this stuff.

I am attaching a snapshot of my Task Manager as requested, however, I watched performance on this this morning and it never was higher than 15%, with normal processes running. So the attached won't show any insight. Maybe someof this clean-up has helped performance. I also use Clean-up to delete files which is a lot better than even Norton's Systemwork's, it gets rid of a lot of stuff Norton doesn't. Sorry to be long-winded but wanted to give you as much detail as possible.

You said your running Norton Anti-Virus and AVG Anti-Virus. It is not a good idea to have two Anti-Viruses on one computer. You should remove one and I would personally keep AVG as Norton is probably the main reason why your laptop is slow as it is a resource hog.

Thank you for the continued help and support, I appreciate it. Ok, I eliminated the items in my log, and ran Ewido. I'm pasting the report as it did not remove 1 item; also looks like the items I eliminated ares still in the log?

Also, as I mentioned in previous posts my CPU utilization runs very high, before running Ewido, CPU utization was between 55-85% with nothing running. After running Ewido utilization is back down to 1-5%?

I ran CWShredder and it was clean. I ran Panda Activescan and pasting report below along with latest HJT log. Additionally, I have attached a screen shot of the task manager. You'll see CPU utilization at 82%, however nothing other than IE running. As always thanks for the help.

Go here and download then run Silent Runners.vbs. It generates a log, please post the information back in this thread.
If you have a script blocking program, please allow the file to run. It is not malicious.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Once in Safe Mode, please run Ewido, and do a full scan. During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK.

Save the logfile from the scan. Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

You need to expand the view of the Task Manager up and down so that all the processes can be seen and post that. We are unable to see what is running below the bottom of the window.

Ok, sorry been away for a couple of days. I think this computer is getting the better of me. Very frustrating. I eliminated the items above and pasting HJT log. However, I ran Silent runner and it executed but I couldn't find the log. The screen saying the file name closes so fast I had to copy the screen image. I found the name of the file but could not find the file on my computer. I'm attaching the screen print for you to see. That's as far as I got tonite. Let me know what you think. As for the CPU utilization that really varies, right now it seems fine so I wont copy that, I'll wait until you tell me what else to do. I appreciate the continue support, you guys are great. The output text from silent runners will be created to wherever you are running it from, so if you have silent runners on the desktop, that is where the log will be .

Thanks, but when I run silent runner, when it stop running it flashes a window and then closes immediately. The only way I can tell where the file is, is to take a snapshot of the screen image before it closes. This is what I attached previously. Unfortunately I can't find the path where it says the file is? Any thoughts on this, and what I should do? Thanks for the help!

In the meantime I am going to re-run all of my spyware & anti virus programs and post a new HJT. Its seems that no matter what I do though the sidesearch item continues to show up in my HJT log. I'm currently not on my IBM laptop but will post as soon as I can. Thanks again for all your help, you guys truly are great!

Create a new folder and drag Silent Runners into it. Start it running. You should get a couple of small pop ups indicating that it has started. When finished another pop up tells you where the text file is saved to. As I said before, the file will be saved wherever silent runners is located .
The text file will be called 'Startup Programs.' May take a couple of minutes to complete.
Also, I am not seeing any attachments in your previous post.

Ok thanks. I will try to run silent runner in a new folder. I did do a complete new sweep with my spyware & antivirus. I'm running Ad-Aware 1.6 & Spybot 1.4, also ran MS Antispy. I ran a full virus scan with Norton, and it came back with one adware threat that it could not remove (Mbkwnst.exe), also MS Antispy finds Hunt bar every time and removes it but it always comes back.

I am attaching the screenshot of the silent runner, although I'll try to run it from its own folder after this round. With the sreen shot it tells me where the file is but I do not have a folder that its says its in. I did a search for the txt file but couldn't find it.

I ran a complete Ewido scan and it removed 59 detections. I'm pasting the log.

Ok here are the Ewido & HJT logs, again thanks for continuing to work with me. As I said in earlier posts, the sidesearch.cgi comes back every time even though I check fix with HJT.

It is very important that you get Silent Runners into it's own folder as it will make it so much easier to find the text file it produces .

Run HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

Download the attached zip file and unzip fixme.reg. Close all browser windows. Double click to run it and when asked if you want to merge with your registry, answer yes.

Do a system search for Mbkwnst.exe and delete it.

Reboot.

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

Again, thanks for all the help, I do truly appreciate it. Ok I did put silent runner in its own folder ran it and I'm posting the log. I did run this before I did anything else so if I need to do it again let me know. I added fixme.reg as indicated. I deleted Mbkwnst.exe as requested. Unfortunatly as you'll seein the HJT log websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id= is still there. CPU utilization at the moment is stable.

Here are the logs and thanks, again, when this is over I would like some recommendations on how to prevent this stuff from happening. I thought I ad all the tools I need but I guessnot. Also I would like to understand how the Folding Org works and understand more of how I can help! Thanka again.

Nothing bad in that log . You need to disable one of the AV's from starting with your PC. They can conflict and cause all sorts of problems.
Also, you will have to disable MS antispyware before fixing with hijackthis. These real-time protection programs have been known to re-insert entries that are fixed as they do not discriminate when changes to the registry are made.
Be an idea to disable Ewido too and winpatrol, if that has the same protection.
Once you have done that, post another log please.

This is usually very easy to remove and am not certain as to why it keeps returning if not because of those anti-spyware programs .

Run hijackthis and hit the Open the Misc Tools Section and then the Open Uninstall Manager.

Then hit the Save List button. Save to the desktop for easy access. Open the log file and copy the entire list and paste it here please.

Copy the bold text below and paste it into notepad. Save it to your desktop as find.bat and make sure type is set to All Files.

I would uninstall these Viewpoint Manager and Viewpoint Media Player then download the attached zip file and unzip fixme.reg. Close all browser windows. Double click to run it and when asked if you want to merge with your registry, answer yes.

Reboot once done another log please.

Go to;

Start>>Run and type regedit
Press enter.
Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\PLSRemote Service (PLSRemoteSvc)

If PLSRemote Service (PLSRemoteSvc) exists , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

Now navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_PLSRemote Service (PLSRemoteSvc)

If LEGACY_PLSRemote Service (PLSRemoteSvc) exists then right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

As for the R1 entry, it has me stumped. The only thing I can think is that it is being reinstated by an anti-spyware tool.
If you do a google for that entry, you will see that a simple fix with hijackthis always gets rid of it.
I will continue looking for an alternate fix for you.

Ok, I eliminated the first entry in the registry, but the second one,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\R oot\LEGACY_PLSRemote Service (PLSRemoteSvc) wasn't there.

That fixed the one entry .

Open regedit and navigate to; HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main and click on the main folder. In the right hand pane, locate search page and right click on it. Select Modify and paste the following line into the pop-up.

Reboot and see how you go now. Make sure that Internet Explorer is closed first.
