Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)

The only other thing I can think of now is to run Adaware, Spybot, Ewido and download counterspy from http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4520.html and run it.
All in safe mode.
Other than that, I am at a loss .
Cruncie:
Ok, I have run everything you asked in safe mode, and still continue to have the same issue. I also removed AVG antivirus as I had Norton already, and earlier you said that having 2 antiviruses might cause some issues. One other issue, even though all of the anti spyware identify the Hunt Bar, it always comes back. Is this related to this:
or is that something else. Here is the Hunt bar registry key,
//HKLM/SOFTWARE/BTEIN
as always thanks for continuing to help, I do appreciate it.

Go here http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/ and download, unzip and run the Registry Search Tool. Type BTEIN in the dialog box. Let it run and after a few minutes, a prompt will appear. Click OK to write the results to Notepad and post them here.
Cruncie:
Ok here you go. Here is the log from the script. This always shows up when I run MS Antispy and it removes it but it always comes back :-( Thanks for the help!
; Registry search results for string "btiein" 10/16/2005 11:53:08 AM
; NOTE: This file will be deleted when you close WordPad.
; You must manually save this file to a new location if you want to refer to it again later.
; (If you save the file with a .reg extension, you can use it to restore any Registry changes you make to these values.)
Save the file as regfix.reg and in the 'Save as Type' select 'All Files.'
Disable counterspy and any other real-time protection tools and double click on the regfix file. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, select yes.
Reboot and see if it is still there.
Cruncie:
Ok I ran the above procedure and unfortunately still the same issue persists. Here is the HJT log. I ran MS Antispy before this post and the same entries are there:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\BTIEIN]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\BTIEIN\BTIEIN]
Thanks again for continuing to work with me on this.

Something has to bringing this back, but what? Something like this has happened before when a member had Adaware's Adwatch installed. It kept reinserting the entries even when it was disabled. The only solution that worked was to uninstall Adwatch totally, then run the fix. Everything was fine after that.
If you go down that path, you will have to uninstall all your real-time protection tools, reboot, then run the fixes again.
Remember to note any registration numbers you have.
Cruncie:
Sorry, I have been gone a few days. Are you saying I need to uninstall all my spyware & antivirus software? I have lots Norton, SPybot, Adaware, MS Antispy, Counterspy, Ewido ??
BB
Sometimes that is what it takes . As I said before, I believe it is one of those programs that protect the registry that is preventing the fix from going ahead. I may well be wrong, but I can see no other reason for it.

Cruncie:
Ok before I remove everything, I have removed Counterspy, WinPatrol, and a few other useless programs I had on here. I re-ran AdAware, Spybot, & MS Antispy, and have run EWIDO. They all find the Huntbar, but can't seem to eliminate it. I am posting the HJT & Ewido log. Let me know what you think and what my next steps should be. I still have Norton Systemworks loaded as well.

Put it in its own folder. You may want to keep this program. It is an excellent free, registry editor.
Install, run, copy and paste this line to reglite's address bar:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE
and hit the "go" tab. Find: "BTIEIN" value on the right side panel. Click on BTIEIN and then hit the delete button.
If it will not delete, go to the security button and select 'Take Ownership.'
Once done you should be able to delete it.
Cruncie:
Thanks for the continued support. I installed the registry software and performed the tasks as directed. Unfortunately even though I was given ownership I could not delete the BTIEIN. This is unbeleivable. I'm attaching the latest HJT log as well. Thanks again.

This service is by no means 100% safe. If this scanner says 'OK', it does not necessarily mean the file is clean. There could be a whole new virus on the loose. NEVER EVER rely on one single product only, not even this service, even though it utilizes several products. Therefore, We cannot and will not be held responsible for any damage caused by results presented by this non-profit online service.
Also, we are aware of the implications of a setup like this. We are sure this whole thing is by no means scientifically correct, since this is a fully automated service (although manual correction is possible). We are aware, in spite of efforts to proactively counter these, false positives might occur, for example. We do not consider this a very big issue, so please do not e-mail us about it. This is a simple online scan service, not the university of Wichita.
Scanning can take a while, since several scanners are being used, plus the fact some scanners use very high levels of (time consuming) heuristics. Scanners used are Linux versions, differences with Windows scanners may or may not occur. Another note: some scanners will only report one virus when scanning archives with multiple pieces of malware.
Virus definitions are updated every hour. There is a 15Mb limit per file. Please refrain from uploading tons of hex-edited or repacked variants of the same sample.

Just for the heck of it, rename those files I had you upload then boot into safe mode. Go through the steps to delete the btein entries again and see if you are able to delete them.
Has there been any change in your PC?
Cruncie:
No luck, I renamed the files (I kept the same name but changed the DLL part to TEST.
I booted in to safe mode, and tried to eliminate the BTIEIN again, but no luck.
Should I change the file names back to the original names? As for the PC is better but still slow. Let me know what else you think. Thanks again.
Are you able to change the name of any of the Btein entries in the registry? Perhaps if you can, you may also be able to delete then?
Running out of idea's though .
Cruncie:
I wasn't able to change or delete the names in the registry either. I get access denied.
The computer runs OK,I'm not getting any pop-ups or re-directs. I keep running the usual stuff AdAware 1.6, Spybot 1.4, Ms Antispy and they all find them but can't delete them. I also ran Ewido in safe mode again, its finds them too but can't remove the entries. Other than that I think the log is cleaned. Posting both the Ewido & HJT logs, let me know if you have any other thoughts or suggestions. As always thanks for your continued support. It is greatly appreciated.

Ok thanks. I have recently added memory to the laptop. It now has 778MB RAM from 256MB. I have run all of the antivirus, spam ware software, and clean-up utilities. I have defragged, and eliminated lots of files. This machine should really run fast (I think). Unfortunately it doesn't. Some times its good and sometimes it's not. The CPU utilization when no programs applications are running (other than the startup processes) can range from 50-100%. I don't get it.
I do notice one strange thing when I look at the config file and the startup programs there are 3 unidentified programs that have checks next to them to start. I'm attaching a snapshot of the config startup. Do you think this might be what's causing trouble? Let me know what you think. Also attaching my current HJT log. Thanks again for all your help.

Ok here you go. Here is the log from the script. This always shows up when I run MS Antispy and it removes it but it always comes back :-( Thanks for the help!

REGEDIT4
; RegSrch.vbs © Bill James
; Registry search results for string "btiein" 10/16/2005 11:53:08 AM
; NOTE: This file will be deleted when you close WordPad.
; You must manually save this file to a new location if you want to refer to it again later.
; (If you save the file with a .reg extension, you can use it to restore any Registry changes you make to these values.)
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\BTIEIN]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\BTIEIN\BTIEIN]
Save the file as regfix.reg and in the 'Save as Type' select 'All Files.'
Disable counterspy and any other real-time protection tools and double click on the regfix file. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, select yes.
Reboot and see if it is still there.

If you go down that path, you will have to uninstall all your real-time protection tools, reboot, then run the fixes again.
Remember to note any registration numbers you have.
Sorry, I have been gone a few days. Are you saying I need to uninstall all my spyware & antivirus software? I have lots Norton, SPybot, Adaware, MS Antispy, Counterspy, Ewido ??
BB
Thanks for your continued support, I do appreciate it.

Thanks for the continued support. I installed the registry software and performed the tasks as directed. Unfortunately even though I was given ownership I could not delete the BTIEIN. This is unbeleivable. I'm attaching the latest HJT log as well. Thanks again.

Sorry been away for a few days. Not sure of the results, I scanned the files as indicated but not sure of the results, the first file says , found nothing but on the bottom it says it detected tictac.exe ? That must be from something else? Looks like both scans didn't find anything? Thanks for continuing to work with me on this, I do truly appreciate it.

Disclaimer
Please do not ask for viruses uploaded here, unless you work for an anti-virus vendor. They are not for trade. This is a legitimate service, not a VX site. Viruses uploaded here will be distributed to antivirus vendors without exception.

Has there been any change in your PC?
No luck, I renamed the files (I kept the same name but changed the DLL part to TEST.
I booted in to safe mode, and tried to eliminate the BTIEIN again, but no luck.
Should I change the file names back to the original names? As for the PC is better but still slow. Let me know what else you think. Thanks again.
BB
Running out of idea's though
I wasn't able to change or delete the names in the registry either. I get access denied.
The computer runs OK,I'm not getting any pop-ups or re-directs. I keep running the usual stuff AdAware 1.6, Spybot 1.4, Ms Antispy and they all find them but can't delete them. I also ran Ewido in safe mode again, its finds them too but can't remove the entries. Other than that I think the log is cleaned. Posting both the Ewido & HJT logs, let me know if you have any other thoughts or suggestions. As always thanks for your continued support. It is greatly appreciated.

If your PC is behaving ok you should be good to go
Cruncie:

Change the file extension to .txt and attach it here for a look.
You can also try running spysweeper if you like. Supposed to get rid of a lot of stuff.
Have you tested your memory at all? Try running Memtest86. It will find any errors there. http://www.memtest86.com/
