I've been out of the hardware game for a while - build me a system!

I haven't built a system in quite a while, probably almost a year. I'm out of the loop.

I have a ~$500 budget, and I need almost a complete system, including WinXP.

We've already got the optical drive taken care of, so no need to spec that out.

Two requirements:

300gb HD
1gb ram

the rest is up in the air. Processor speed isn't critical, but I don't want a sempron either. This will be used for light video editing.

Go! :D

Going to be doing any gaming prime? or is this dedicated to light video editing etc?

Also, is overclocking headroom important at all? or will this simply be run at stock clocks?

sledge, thanks for the info, but we are going to be assembling it. I'm looking for newegg/monarch/zipzoomfly links here, not a fully assembled PC from your shop :)

    Thanks, though

I mean when you say light video editing... Whats he really gonna do? mostly surf the web and email with some very occasional video playing around stuff?

If so a older $35 radeon 7500 works fine. I mean my porn looks as good on it as on my $200 pci-e ATI all-in-wonder x600.

I mean if he's gonna spend an hour a week just jacking around a little playing mostly then video doesnt have to be a $100+ video card.

    Tex

Are you interested in used parts? That can save you bucks on motherboards and processors.

Processors and motherboards: watch private deals boards at S-M, [H], Anandtech, PCPerspective

Hard Drives: watch CompUSA for truly great deals. I got a 300GB 7200/8 about three weeks ago for about $99. Every couple weeks CompUSA has 160GB WD or Hitachi for $39.95 after MIR. (one per household - 1 X 160 GB rebate for you at home, 1 X 160 GB for another name at your business address) - total $80 for 320GB.

DRAM: there are a number of cheap brands at Newegg. You can get 2 X 512, CAS 2.5/PC3200 for around $100 shipped. Most of the smaller-name stuff works exactly as advertised - it's just missing OC potential, prestige, and bloated price.

Not sure what "light" video editing means. I infer that you would not need an expensive gaming vid card. I picked up an 8MB PCI card for $10. Picture is great, but FPS is crap (for Folding box). But the point is, just get what you need and avoid new. Quality is out there used - just need to dig.

That is an excellent deal on the PNY DRAM. I wouldn't pass that up.

When I say light video editing, I mean this is what he does for a living. This is not an internet-surfing email home machine. He uses Adobe Premier.
