Very Strange Problem

edited October 2005 in Science & Tech
I had Norton Antivirus on my computer, and I loaded the disk for my wireless internet installation. On the screen for it, it said Norton Antivirus 2005. I clicked the link and it began to load the new version of Antivirus...In the mitz of it, I clicked cancel, and my Norton Antivirus is gone! I tried to reload it back on, and nothing happens when I put in the disk. So I went to Best buy and purchased the actual Norton Internet secrity disk, put it in the computer, and click to load it, and nothing happens!!

So Im scared **** to use the computer without the firewall and antivirus etc. I dunno what to do. I also tried to turn on the Microsoft Firewall , and when I click the link it says "Cannot load due to an unidentified problem"

The first step would be to turn off the computer, then to reboot. Have you done that? This is probably just a matter of getting firewall and router settings configured correctly. We'll get you through this.

It been like this for a few days now. The router etc. is all hooked up to one of my roomates computers. I deleted all my Norton files, and tried to reinstall it with the new version, and it still nothing happens. I also tried restarting in safe mode and loading the Norton disk and still, it doesnt work...

I'm pretty sure this is not a Windows problem per se, but a software (networking sumpineranother0 configuration problem. I'm competent with home networking, but not well versed enough to offer you advice. I'm moving this to the Networking sub-forum.

OK you network gurus, let's get this new member up to speed.

Please tell us the networking hardware and architecture:

wireless card, brands and settings (wpa, wep, g/d?)
router, brand and settings (firewalled? WEP, WPA, g/d?)
network or just Internet Connection Sharing

    and so forth

I have a LINKSYS Wireless G card. The network is a WEP, and just internet connection sharing.

All I want to do is load my norton disk on but it won't work. I even went and exchanged it back at the store and got a new one and still nothing.

Also I did have a computer virus not too long ago. A worm from aol instant messenger. I removed it. Maybe that is causing my norton not to load??

Im thinking of doing a system restore, but the only problem is I don't have an external hardrive to back up all my files (theres thousands!) If I were to do a system restore, and just resotre the software that all came with the computer (norton ) would that erase all my files?

Here's my log file. Anything look wrong with it?? Could something in there be blocking the Norton from loading?

When you say nothing happens when you insert the Norton CD, what exactly takes place? Does it try to install, then conk out? Or does it not even start up?

System Restore just rolls back your system files to the last time you set a restore point and saved them. Your data should remain untouched, though be aware that any time you have a serious problem and do something major you are taking a roll of the dice on bootability. If you are confident that you can fix things up ahould something go awry, I would give that a shot.

Just in case, print out the instructions found here. If things go badly a Repair Install could be a lifesaver.

If you're not sure what to do and don't have easy access to another computer (so you can come back here for more help), please ask about any of this before proceeding. We'll be happy to help you be sure you are taking the right steps to get this problem solved. :)

I put the disk in and The screen comes up and give me the 3 options: Install Norton Internet Security 2005, Browse, and Exit. When I click Install Norton Internet security 2005, it begins to load and than dies out.

This probably doesn't help much but,,, I haven't had anything made by norton in my PC for years, it always caused more problems than it fixed. Your router should have a firewall anyway and there are plenty of free anti virus progs around. Do you have to have norton?
  • edited October 2005
Well I already bought the disk, and they won't let me refund it. So I guess im stuck with it. But right now, I will take anything. I need a firewall asap...I tried to turn on my Microsoft firewall and it said "Cannot display fire settings due to an unidentified problem" when I click the firewall link. Also I cannot load windows classic style settings. Maybe that has something to do with it??

I had a worm from aol instant messenger like 2 weeks ago. It gone now though...or at least I think it is..

What the best firewall to get?

It may be worth your while to go to our Spyware/Virus/Trojan Discussion Forum and be sure it's really most sincerely dead. Make sure you read the instructions there. :)

A router with a built-in firewall is best. Software can be hacked; hardware is a lot harder to override without the miscreant actually entering your home (in which case you have a more serious problem than just computer security).
