At least I love Quicktime and I enjoy iTunes as well.

I want it just the other way - QuickTime has no business existing, and it makes me cry every time iTurds wants to install it. I have iTurds for the sole reason of chapters in the 75 Minutes podcast --- is there another podcast program that can handle AAC chapters (and/or links and pictures with each chapter)?

But Microsoft does that all the time with automatic updates which is set to download without asking, and they always take loads of personal information from you your computer every time you log onto their website

    A few points to make:

    1) Nope, Microsoft takes lots of information about your computer when you download updates, but NOT personal information.
    2) Apple has always made themselves out to be a cut above their competition, hence the disappointment in this case.
    3) It's simple to turn off automatic updates. Then you can be selective in what you want. There are some updates that I have not, and will not accept.

Not an apologist here for MS. It's just that if Apple wishes to be perceived as superior, superior behavior would be in order.

My understanding of the requirement for quicktime with itunes was that itunes used quicktime runtimes as a backend for encoding / decoding. So itunes (as designed) can't function without quicktime.

So if you want itunes you need quicktime for it to work.
If you want just quicktime you can download from the link above.

This is the way 1-way integration is meant to work. I'm not an apple fanatic, but I'm not sure what the major criticism is in this case.

It's exactly what you just said. I don't understand why they feel the need to use two separate programs to accomplish one task. Especially when iTunes runs so terribly on a PC. I've heard it's pretty good on mac, but on PC... it makes me sad.

My mom needed iTunes for the music store, but when I downloaded it, guess what comes with it, Quicktime, yay. Which then wants to associate itself with every single damn format and add an autostart thing to the taskbar and even if you untick EVERYTHING, it still uses itself for ALL the media that would normally open in your web-browser, so rather than downloading it you're now stuck with Quicktime playing it in your browser, yay. That brings me on to my next point, Quicktime WILL NOT let you choose to not have MOV files accociated to the program, it won't let you untick the box.

My name is Ben Hodgetts, I'm a 1337 h4x0r and I completely despise Apple.

this is not true. iTunes may need Quicktime for AAC decoding or something, but it definitely does not require it for mp3 decoding (how would that make any sense anyway). Any format that you can play using winamp, which would require you have the correct codec for it, iTunes can play without quicktime. I know this, because I don't have quicktime installed, and I use iTunes all the time

I really never had any of these so called issues many of you are having. On top of that if you don't like the file associations then change them. Mine only opens up MOV's and a few others, but for pretty much any of my videos I have on my PC, even directly after installing both said programs, WMP still opened all my videos except the ones only QT can play; IE: MOV's.

Runs great on my system as well, plus the codec is so nice to have. If i could I would only have all MOV's on my system becuase it is so pretty. I don't care if it came from Apple. I never had an Apple system in my life, but I've used them quite a bit.

Quicktime Pro is a must on my system for the things I do. I have quicktime 6 Pro, this weekend I'll be buying QT7 Pro. Can't beat the $30 price for what all you get and can do with the software

Actually I have other programs that can, and that I would prefer, to play MOV files, and saying "change it" is fine, but when QT runs itself again at some point, considering it's hijacked my browser extentions, then it will just reassign MOV to itself.

I think QT has its uses for those more serious about computer movie making. As for me, I consider it a virus.

all right. i dont prefer QT either but i havent even had to play mov files in a long time, but now for physics and classes like that, our school uses qt for everything because they are gay, and i need to find something to play mov files. im gonna go look for a mov plugin for winamp. if you know of one post a link incase i cant find it, is there even a plugin for it or is it proprietery to apple?

I just hate OSX, its just ummm, how do i say this, its bad.

Ok you apple fanboys dont give me crap for saying that, but its my opinion, and everyone has different opinions about it. I just hate everything about it, especially the fact that every single computer is overpriced by at least 25%

Many people (including me) use QuickTime Alternative, which lets you play movs in Media Player Classic with no hassle.

On point number 1 your right they dont take perseonal imformation but they take information that could be used to determine your identity. On point 3, this is also true but then its the same with itunes, you dont need to get with quicktime
