Microsoft Plans Deliberate Xbox 360 Shortage

Gizmodo is reporting that Microsoft plans to limit the number of Xbox 360s available to retailers on launch day to ensure the consoles will sell out, creating a buzz around the console.

Gizmodo’s new Norwegian correspondent SilverSnake sends shocking—shocking!—news about Microsoft’s Xbox 360 retail marketing demands. Retailers in the land of King Herald V are each being alloted a supply of 20 consoles, 6 core editions and 14 premium versions. But there is a catch: In order to get all of them, each shop or chain has to sign an agreement saying that they will sell out of all 20 consoles on the release date (which is December 2 over there). On top of that, the retailers must agree to sell a minimum of 2 games per console.
Microsoft Norway even said them selves that they’re gonna use the ‘Sold Out’ as a marketing strategy to hype the console.

Gay! PS3 is going to Pawn Xbox 360! this will be fun to watch how crazy people get over these freaking consoles!

Just buy a computer, parts are all over the place, and with graphics moving faster than light, PC's will still dominate the graphics market :) and yes Prime even Mac's

All this will do is make people buy more than one so that they can sell them on Ebay for $5k.

Same thing happened when the PS2 first came out.

Tightened supply to induce sellout status is a very old business tactic. It usually works, creating news and excitement. Old tactic? Yes, and it still used, because it still works. It not quite as nauseating though as the car dealers and furniture stores - every week is the greatest sale in history, or at least the greatest sale since the sale the same business had just a couple weeks before the latest, greatest sale.

I may have assessed the situation incorrectly. Apparently, per this Tom's Hardware reporting, Microsoft is distributing the XBox near simultaneously worldwide. Wishing to avoid Sony's distribution bungle of the PSP a few months ago, Microsoft is casting a very wide, international distribution net with only start-up shipping quantities.
