well you might want to post a liiitle bit more information about your situation. what hardware are you using, OS, what you've tried, etc.

If you're just trying to move files, just burn a CD/DVD or get a flash drive.

I dont want to give up... I want to be able to make this work.... if anyone can help, please do. --Alyssa

I tried creating a wireless network to share files, but this did not work. Then I tried using an ethernet cable to transfer the files, but I can't figure out how. I dont have the money for a flash drive, and for some unknown reason my CD burner has quit wanting to burn CD's. I have Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition. Thanks!!!

We're making progress but still need more information, please. Is your friend's computer also WinXP? Are you using a wireless router? Does your friend's computer have a wireless networking card installed?

Yes, my friend's computer is also using WinXP and he has a wireless card, as do I. We have a wireless router connected to our cable modem. I tried setting up a wireless network between the two of us so that I could transfer these files, but for some reason, the files from my computer cannot be accessed on his.

Did you use the Network Setup Wizard to create your network. We still don't even know if you actually set up a network. If you did set up a network, it may be as simple as setting folder permissions so that one computer has permission to access folders and files from the other computer. We'll get you there.

Do the computers see each other - can each computer see folders in the other's My Computer/Explorer? Let me attach a screenshot. Check to see if both computers have entries under My Network Places. I'm using Windows Explorer for folder/computer navigation, not My Computer. I find it superior because it gives a left and right pane window view of folders. (Don't worry about the "Greyhound" names - those are just the names I assigned the three computer on my home wireless network.)

A LIST OF SOME BASIC THINGS TO CHECK IN AN UNDERSTANDABLE FORMAT:

    1. Make sure that all computers have the file and print sharing option enabled

    2. Check that all computers are in the same workgroup

    3. Check that all computers are on the same subnet (just for consistency)

    4. Ensure that the folder in question is being shared and that the firewall understands to let traffic pass for file and print sharing (netbios ports) assuming that you are using software firewalls

    5. Ensure that permissions are set for you to access the files in need, etc.

We need to find out first exactly what steps she's taken and exactly where the failure occured. We need to watch out for information overload. Alyssa, are you still there? :)

[EDIT]: thank, zero.counter. If we can just get her to pop back in, I'm sure we can get her network and file transfers functioning.

Sorry I took so long... crazy day.

Okay Leonardo, I found windows explorer, finally... it was hiding. And yes, it is showing both computers on mine, but on his it says 'Musak share (the name of the network) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network source. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is currently not available."

Ensure that you have the appropriate permissions on the computer hosting the music files in question. Read this article, that I usually refer people to when setting up file sharing for newbies...

Okay, but according to my computer, file sharing is on, and I can see his computer, but his computer cannot see my shared files.

    file sharing is on
OK, good. Do you designate the specific folders in which you have files for sharing? On the folder(s) that contain data/files to be shared, right click, select Sharing and Security from the menu options, then check the box "Share this folder on the network", then select OK at the bottom of the options window. If you wish to push those files from your computer to his, then on the receiving computer, you need to follow the sharing steps described above for a folder that will receive the files.

Okay, sharing is enabled for both his shared music folder and mine. Now, how do I go about putting my music on his computer? :wtf:

If in both computers under My Network Places, you can see the transfer folders, you simply move the files the same way you move them from one folder to another on your system- cut and paste or copy and paste.

I can see both of us under 'veiw workgroup members'. Is that the same? I tried to open his computer from mine, but it says that i might not have permission to do that. :bawling:

You should now be able to open up either computer, and see all of the other computer's folders that you designated (through right click, "Sharing"). Here's an example. Under My Network Places, you can see two of the computers on my network: Greyhound and Greyhound 2. I am viewing folders designated for sharing on Greyhound 2. I can open any of those folders, select the files I want, and then copy and paste to any of the computers on my network. As far as "workgroup members", I suppose that means the computers on your network.

    :banghead: :screwed:

On my computer, I can see him, but cannot access his computer.. and on his, it wont even let me open the Musak Share network. It says for both that we dont have permission to do that.....
Hmmm.... so I've followed everything you have told me so far, and it is just not working. Is there anything else that I can do? I appreciate all of your help so far!! Thank you so much!!
