Please, please help! Very persistent home search assistant

hi there

could you please, please help me with my problems with, amongst other spywares, home search assistant.

i have followed the guide thread to removing the problem and had some success. unfortunately, it always rears its ugly head again when i get to step 14.

one problem i have had following the guide is that i can never seem to find an entry in the registry matching one of the ones on the guide (step 14). i can find one at the start of the guide, but i have been unable to find any corresponding entry or entries while in safe mode. when i highlight the "services" folder in the left window, only one file appears in the window on the right. i have tried going through the registry entry by entry, and using the "find" option to look for the files, but have never been able to find one.

any help at all that you can give me would be deeply, deeply appreciated!!!

    Can I ask why you think you have Home Search Assistant?
  • edited November 2005
    erm...

    everytime i've started up my computer for the past 4 days it has had HSA. Tonight was different: a whole mess of different stuff like "winfixer" and "windows security center" came up as well.

    so i ran adaware and spybot, along with HSRemover, then posted my log. i just noticed that the HSA icons are no longer showing in "add/remove programs".

    have i done something wrong? i haven't attempted to restart the computer yet, and i am still getting all sorts of crazy pop-ups.

    I asked that question because your log doesn't show HSA so you must have cleaned it up, hopefully. BUT, you mentioned that you have not restarted your computer, correct? Reboot your computer and post a new HJT log. This way I can tell if you still got HSA or not because HSA will come back after you have rebooted and its still lurking. :)

    ok i "hard" re-booted by pulling the plug. my homepage is now about:blank but all it is is a blank screen. i still have pop-ups. sorry or taking up so much of your time with this, its greatly appreciated!

    You don't have an Anti-Virus or Firewall on your computer - we will sort that out later.
    ===

    Download CWShredder 2.15 from here. Check for updates first and then Run it and press the *fix,* not scan and allow it to clean the infection. Close all browser and explorer windows before hitting the fix button.
    ===

    Disable System Restore - explained here

    View hidden files and folders - explained here

    Go into Safe Mode - explained here
    ===

    Do another scan with CWShredder
    ===

    Check the following in HJT and click 'Fix Checked'

    i need my bed to, lol. thanks again for your time.

    did what you asked, although none of the 01 files were to be found. i've re-booted back into normal mode, and the only thing i seem to have now is a warning window saying "An exception occurred while trying to run ""C:/WINDOWS/system32/SSDOCVW.DLL",DllGetVersion"; and also a couple of pop-up ads.

    latest HJT log:

    Remove the following with HJT:

    O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdocvw.dll

    ===

    Find and Delete the following:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdocvw.dll << this file
    ===

    Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

    http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
    http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

    Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

    IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

    It looks the file has gone from your log.
    ===

    Lets try and remove the popups:

    Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

    From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

    IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

    dammit

    one thing after another!

    i ran the fix and rebooted as asked, but nothing happened after the desktop icons disappeared and reappeared. so i checked the note pad: the notepad icon in the programs menu has been replaced with the generic program icon (the white and blue window one) and when i click it i get this message: "The C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\smss.exe application cabbot be run in Win32 mode".

    i tried running the fix from the original removal guide thread (missingfilessetup) to sort the notepad but it still isn't working! i don't even know if the l2mfix scan worked.

    i tried HJT and it opened the notepad without any problem. latest log:

    My mistake, sorry. That shouldn't have been done first.

    Do this first:

    IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

    its not working!

    i'm getting a "16 bit MS DOS Subsystem" box opening up saying: "C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmd.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."

    When I click either of the buttons i get a window saying: "C:\Documents and Settings\Computer\Desktop\l2mfix\report.txt is not a valid Win32 application".

    I've screwed this up, haven't I? lol.

    Dont worry too much, yet. :eek3: We'll do this the manual way.

    Download and run VX2Finder(.exe).
    http://www.downloads.subratam.org/VX2Finder.exe

    Open the program and click the 'Click to Find VX2.aBetterInternet' button. This will attempt to find all VX2 related files and registry keys and when present display them in its logfile. To create a logfile, click the button named: 'Make Log'. This will open logfile using Notepad. Please post (copy/paste) the results and post them in this topic.

    Download these two tools:

    http://www.downloads.subratam.org/DllCompare.exe
    &
    http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.exe

    Run Dllcompare by clicking the "Run Locate.com" then click Compare button... when done post that log here. do not reboot once you have posted the logs because all the filenames will change otherwise.

    I've ran VX2Finder, but nothing happens when i hit "make log". my notepad must be screwed up.

    Nothing happens when I hit the "make a log of what was found" button after scanning with dllcompare either. however, i manually copied and pasted the individual entries from the "bottom" window. i would have done it with the top window, but i would be there all night! i hope this is of use to you.

    Stay offline when doing the following fix.

    Open killbox and paste in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\l4l60e~1.dll

    With the full path to the file name in the topmost textbox, click the option *replace on reboot* and *Use Dummy* which will create a numbered dummy file instantly for you.

    Click the Red X ...and for the confirmation message that will appear, you will need to click Yes
    A second message will ask to Reboot now? you will need to click No (since you are not finished adding all related files in yet)

    Repeat the above for each of these;

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\lmadperf.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\k2jslc~1.dll
    C:\Windows\System32\Guard.tmp

    On that last file, close all programs and Reboot your computer.

    Post another log from dllcompare please.

    ok, your going to kill me now...

    i had a power cut last night and the pc went dead for a while, so i've had to reboot. i take it this means that the files have renamed themselves? do i have to start over?

    really, really sorry about this! i'm at work right now, but i'll post up a HJT log (and anthing else you need) when i get in around 6. or can i just follow the steps in the above post?

    Can you also post the DLLcompare log please.

    I'm on the laptop at the moment but when I go on the main PC, i'l give you instructions to follow. Just don't reboot and hope you don't have a power cut :)

    Repeat the above for each of these;

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\lmadperf.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\i224lc~1.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\oce2.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\k2jslc~1.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\m6nqlg~1.dll
    C:\Windows\System32\Guard.tmp

    On that last file, close all programs and Reboot your computer.

    Post another log from dllcompare please
