Question re: wireless network

edited November 2005 in Science & Tech
I just received my new laptop, so I installed a D-Link wireless router so I could have wireless internet access (I've used Roadrunner for quite a while for my desktop). A friend came over and help me set it up, and I do in fact have internet access on my new laptop, but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to share folders between the 2 machines. Neither one are visible in "My Network Places". Any help would be appreciated....

First make sure the computer workgroups are the same and the computer names are different.

To check this, Right-Click My Computer and click on the Computer Name tab.

Let us know whats what. :)

Neither computer is visible to the other or neither computer can see folders and files of each other? Big difference. If it's the latter, you need to designate folders for sharing. Right click on the folders in each machine you wish to share, select Sharing and Security, and select your choices.

If your computers are not visible in My Network Places, reboot both computers and they should see each other. If not, rerun the network wizard on each machine and again reboot both comptuters.

and, its the latter. I've designated folders for sharing, but the computers themselves aren't visible in My Netwotk Places. I've rebooted them and still nothing. I guess I'll try and re-run the network wizard.

Rerun the network wizard on the MAIN computer with the router and at the end of the wizard, there will be a file to save. Save it to a floppy disk or removable drive.

Next, move the floppy or removable drive to your laptop and run the file that created. The file will be the network wizard and it will go through the same questions. Go through them again and at the end reboot your computer.

Check to see if the shared folders are visible.

I had a friend do the initial install for me so I'm not 100% up to speed on redoing the install. The wizard says I need to save the network settings to a flash drive and first install them on the router. But, the router has no USB port to plug the flash drive into. I know I can do it via IE and type in my IP address, but when that page comes up, I'm dumbfounded. I see a linksys page setup page....

When you save the network settings on your flash drive, move it to your
LAPTOP and plug it in. You will see the new file within the flash drive. Open it and go through the wizard once more.

No need to plug anything into your router...
