How far can a KX7 go?

Ok I got some new RAM, Kingston HyperX PC3500, today and started OCing some more. I was at 1.9 at 156*12. I OCed it to 173*12 so far. So how far do you guys think this KX7 can go. I havent run into problems yet. Geeky1 has run the same CPU at 2.5GHz and ram will not be a factor so its the motherboard is the limiting factor. Running at 45C now with a SLK800. I could get it a few degrees cooler if I clean it out.

So how far can this old KX7 go. I havent done ant mods to it. I hope to be getting a new motherboard for Christmas so I can OC even higher.

Thrax, how high have you gotten yours?

I've had mine up to 190MHz FSB on the 1800+ (can't remember what multi tho...) but remember that it's not agp/pci locked, so anything over 166 may be a problem... it depends on how well your cards will handle it.

Yeah I know its not AGP/PCI locked. I have it at 5:2:1 right now. I had it at 156 FSB so I guess it can go 23 mhz over 166 I guess if the same thing holds true. Which means l could get 189 theoritically at least. Not sure what the limit was before, that was the limit of my PC2100.

I was thinking it was more around 190 like geeky said. I didnt know anyone got it to 200 or higher.

I am running a Realtech NIC, Live! and R8500LE on the AGP and PCI bus as well as a 80GB WD JB and 40GB WD 7200rpm drives.

FC and Thrax: What other cards were you running at those speeds.

I am guessing I will have to back off on the multi if I go much higher.

Mackanz, Vicodin, myself, DJ-Quack, FatCat and CitrixMeta all got 200+. Mack was the highest at 205 I believe.

As for other cards, I was using a Radeon 9700 Pro, a Linksys LNE100TX, and a Hercules Gametheater XP.

There were probably a dozen or two icrontic/ex-icrontic people that got it. I was just naming them off the top of my head.

Well its unstable at 181 so its at 175 now cause I have to do some homework. I am trying to beat my roommates 2.25 2800+. Got it into windows at 2.21 tho. Back down to 2.11 atm.

    8500, Live 5.1, Conexant 56k modem, WD 400BB

I ran the mem settings as relaxed as possible, using PC2700 and all. You always want to set the multiple to like 8/9 when testing to see how far ur FSB can go. Once u know u FSB limit, up the multi and vCore if neccesary. Dont forget to add a little DDR juice if needed.

DDR juice ;) is at 2.75 from when it needed it for the PC2100 and I know the Ram can go well over 200. I guess I should still see what it is for my motherboard.

Try dropping the multi to 10x (the chip should be unlocked) and see what it can do like that.

Also try bumping the VCore, and try flashing the BIOS to the newest version (one just came out I think) if you haven't done so already.

To reach the 2800+ speed (2.25ghz) @ FSB333 (166.7mhz) you'll need the 13.5x multi. Or you can set the CPU to 14x and start at 150mhz and work your way up.

    14.0x 150 = 2100
    14.0x 160 = 2240
    13.5x 166.7 = 2250
    14.0x 166.7 = 2333

It´s actually not the board that will stop you at 200+, it´s the peripherals that can´t take the added frequency on the agp and the pci bus. With a pci graphics, i have seen 215 fsb on that board but the usb was flaky at that speed. Just make sure to have the harddrives at a highpointcontroller cause you will get corrupted harddrives on the regular ide over 185. (well, MOST peeps did)

yeah i got my hdd fuxored when i first overclock my kx7 to 200+ with my hdd connected to the regular ide, and then i changed it, worked fine since, but i sold my old trusty kx7.

Hmm well I am running 187*10 and everything is ok for now. FAH and 3dmark stable for several hours. NO hdd corruption yet. I dont have any other controllers for my HDDs. All I have are the regular IDE controllers. Should I back it down then?

    You have a KX7-333, not 333r?
  • mmonninmmonnin Centreville, VA

Yes indeed. I had no use for RAID at the time.

And it was actually 186, not 187. Sandra said it was 187.

Running at 171*12.5 or 2.14GHz now just testing out some things.

And I would have to wire mod the CPU to get above 12.5 right?
  • ThraxThrax 🐌 Austin, TX Icrontian

Ah. No HPT RAID controller...You won't get past 190 then. Yes on the wiremod.

Hmm ok then. Think I would be able to get higher mhz with 13 or 13.5x? Highest stable so far with 12.5*171.
