Mmmmmmm, still not doing it's thing. Did you get any error messages? Does L2MFix appear to be trying to run? As much info as you can and I will relay it back to L2MFix's creator.
Hope you don't mind helping out here?

when l2mfix runs, the first window always stays on screen.

The second window which I sent to you before 'running as SNSTDPN\L2MFIX' pops up and stays until it goes and the original l2mfix window completes saying 'zip error nothing to do..... press any keyto continue' this window also sent earlier

The time from start to finish for l2mfix to get to that final stage is about 60 seconds and the HDD seems to churn away most of the time.

The system reboots after I hit any key and I manually enter password to get running to desktop, whereas from the l2mfix window I guess its supposed to reboot and enter password automatically through l2mfix.

When I start l2mfix in option 2 and the first window (which remains and is the only window when finished) the second window starts very quickly after. Most of the HDD churning is when the 'running as SNSTDPN\L2MFIX' window is open.

Thats about all I can think of and its pretty much everything that happens I guess.

The log is in the l2mfix directory. There is also a 'Direct' text file generated at same time as the log which says: -

    C:\Documents and settings\vicki\Desktop\l2mfix

    ....................

Vicki is the user I log in as and this is the administrator of the PC

Hope this is a detailed enough response.

    Cheers

    Here is the reply I got;
seems to be denying permissions on his computer.

Could be the antivirus or His security may be messed up from all those viruses. He can try to restore the default security template by running this dos command.

    secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose

IF he does not have secedit he may have to download it.
    Per PSloss

Secedit (and the more user-friendly administration console) are not distributed with XP Home Edition; however, secedit is available in the XP Service Pack 2 "full-frontal bonanza package" (technical phrase ). If the idea of downloading a 270 MB package for a 18 KB utility file doesn't bother you, then you can download it here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en

Then you would need to unpack the package without installing it, using the -x command line parameter.

    What say you?

    Ok

    Have downloaded

    WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU

which is the SP2 for IT Professionals etc......

Can put on CD and use on laptop.

However, what does he mean unpack and extract using -x command??

I take it I can't just run the pacakge and install it on the XP Home Edition????

    Your advice is needed.

    Hi

Burnt it to Cd but the laptop has hassles reading it.

I have this SP2 on my main PC and wonder if I can unpack the .exe file there and then transfer the secedit to the laptop?

Sorry I am giving problems here, but not that computer literate.

The file I have is WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe

with a bit of hunting I have now managed to unpack the SP2.exe file into a new directory.

There are two instances where secedit appear

File wsecedit in the i386 directory 177kb size DL_file

    and

file secedit in the i386\ip directory 8 kb size EX_file

where do I put these to run the secedit as was suggested.

Can I simply transfer these files to the laptop, put them in appropriate directories and run the secedit command?

feeling a little unsure but happy to be guided :o

    Not being too sure myself, I checked on my XP Pro machine. Found the following;

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\secedit.exe 18Kb
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsecedit.dll 583Kb

So obviously they reside in the system32 folder :). I'm not that much of a whizz myself :D.

Did you place the file into the system32 folder??

    Try this if you are having problems still;

Please download WebRoot SpySweeper from HERE (It's a 2 week trial):
Click the Free Trial link under to "SpySweeper" to download the program.
Install it. Once the program is installed, it will open.
It will prompt you to update to the latest definitions, click Yes.
Once the definitions are installed, click Options on the left side.
    Click the Sweep Options tab.
Under What to Sweep please put a check next to the following:
    Sweep Memory
    Sweep Registry
    Sweep Cookies
    Sweep All User Accounts
    Enable Direct Disk Sweeping
    Sweep Contents of Compressed Files
    Sweep for Rootkits
Please UNCHECK Do not Sweep System Restore Folder.
Click Sweep Now on the left side.
    Click the Start button.
When it's done scanning, click the Next button.
Make sure everything has a check next to it, then click the Next button.
It will remove all of the items found.
Click Session Log in the upper right corner, copy everything in that window.
Click the Summary tab and click Finish.
Paste the contents of the session log you copied into your next reply.
