///GOT EVERYTHING I NEEDED///

Want to buy parts for a new folding box:

/// obsolete: What I need (needs to be cheap):
-motherboard
-CPU
-///Got One///video card, CHEAP AGP or PCI
-memory, 512m (2X256), PC3200
-PCI wireless card - series doesn't matter, as long as it talks to my ~G router
///

WHAT I NEED: DDR2 667 RAM, 945P-based motherboard. If you don't have it, I'd certainly appreciate you pointing to deals you might have seen. This is still going to be a budged box.

BTW, I ended up getting a Pentium D 820 (dual core, 2 X 2.8GHz, 2MB cache, 800MHz FSB) for $135. Don't laugh. No it won't compete with an AMD X2, but it will still be an impressive Folder. :D I did not find any X2 for a budget price.

What I already have:
CPU
PSU
fans
case
monitor & keyboard (and KVM switch)
heatsink9
OS
hard drive

wireless adaptor

Goal: the box needs only to run Folding@Home - nothing else. Performance level needs to approximate a P4 3.2GHz, hyperthreaded with two instances of Folding running. That's approximately the equivalent of two of my AMD Barton 2.8s. (No exaggeration. I've been observing my No. 3 versus my No. 2 for three years on Folding.) No, I don't have to have a P4 setup. If I can get the same FOLDING performance out of an AMD rig, I'd jump on it. I've built far more AMD machines than Intel, so I'm not biased either way. If Intel P4, I'd much prefer Northwood over Presshot. I don't need high performance memory, just two-256MB sticks for dual channel, hyperthreading. Video can be integrated chip on motherboard or cheap add-on card.

Trade? Sure, but not sure if I have anything you'd want. I typically sell stuff as soon as I know I don't need it. I've got fans of all sizes, that's about it.

Thanks, but not what I'm looking for, Zero.

I'm looking for rough equivalent performance under Folding@Home to my systems No. 1 and 3 in my signature.

I have some memory around. Once you find a mobo let me know what you need.

        This-is-an-I-am-still-looking-BUMP. :D

I think I've found the CPU and wireless network adaptor, but still need:

        DRAM (cheap)

Aspire.comtech, please let me know when you have your CPU; I still might be interested.

Ecentric, have you had the opportunity to sort through your RAM stocks yet? :D

        UPDATE --

        WHAT I NEED:

DDR2 667 RAM (does not need to be fast - we're talking budget here)
        945P-based motherboard

If you don't have any of this, I'd certainly appreciate you pointing to deals you might have seen. This is still going to be a budget box.

I'm guessing you picked up the CPU used? Otherwise, that would be a pretty decent addition to anyone's folding stable!

Nope, not used. New OEM, auction at Ebay. No, it's not an AMD dual core, but for $135 it's tremendous Folding bang for the buck. There are lots of 820s available on Ebay. Seems Intel flooded the market, but enthusiast demand is going for AMD.

Leo, looking through the Newegg refurbs, I ran across this MSI 945P Neo-F for $77.35 plus shipping, which is probably fairly expensive to you in the great white north. I've bought several refurb mobo's from the egg with no problems.

EDIT: I also looked through the refurb ram and ran across this Patriot 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Dual Channel Kit for $68.10, which seem pretty cheap to me at least. It's more ram than you were planning to use, but with folding 2 QMD's folding on that 820 the machine will still be fairly responsive.

If the egg wants to charge you an arm and 2 legs to ship to Alaska, PM me and maybe we can make an alternative arrangement that would be cheaper, because I qualify for their cheap shipping here in La.

        Mudd,

Got sleuthing there. I already had the MSI on my short list. I hadn't seen the DRAM. That's an outstanding price. It will work. We'll see what pain the shipping brings. I might very well take you up on your transshipment offer.

One thing I hadn't thought of was the motherboard power requirements. I'm having to purchase a PSU 20 to 24 pin adaptor for the ATX connection and PSU 4 pin to 8 pin adaptor for the EPS12V connector (not buying a new PSU for this build).
