My usual luck..

edited October 2003 in Hardware
Hi all!
I was almost sure it wasn't possible to find those nice Infineon 3.0 rams on a Sapphire 9800 NP
On the contrary, I succeed to find them, on my new card got today.
Wow, so I won't risk to void the guarantee, cause it would be unuseful to flash the 9800pro bios!
I'm so lucky.... don't u think so?:banghead:

Oh no, don't tell me that!!! I have one on the way right now as we speak. I'll find out in a few hours I guess..

    no way to return it.
But who told that Sapphire always has Samsung chips on? :bawling:
    Anyway, i've reached the usual 330mhz (*2)
And no probs with the core even without the Pro bios (more than 400mhz with stock cooling)
As I said, no risk to void the guarantee, but I'm going to put a wb now

    Welcome to Short-Media halfluck!

Where did you buy the card?

    Thx friend
    I bought in Italy

Maybe Ati realized that it was too easy to mod the 9800 to Pro, and decided to increase the partnership with Infineon..

Half-luke... what color is the PCB on that Sapphire Atlantis 9800?

    Red or black?
  • edited October 2003
    red (with infineon 3.0)

Mmm, just got the new 9800 NP by Sapphire after my previous bios flash and the unsuccessful recover

Better gpu (435 without artifacts, and it runs COLDER), but worse ram (the same infineon 3.0, but now I have artifacts after 630mhz, 660 before, and they run HOTTER)

Obviously I'm not flashing the bios, but I've read the problems with cat 3.8, so I'm going to roll back to 3.7 to see if there are any differences

    Do u want I keep u updated?

    Cheers,
    Halfluke

    Nothing
memories still very hot and nothing more than 640mhz
    These crappy Infineons!

I can feel better only thinking that even at 900mhz or more, the FX is always bull**** :D

The RAM shouldn't be more than lukewarm to the touch. I suggest you get a Zalman Fan Bracket + 92mm fan... that will be more effective than RAMsinks, and it should let you OC both the core and the RAM some more...

You dont want to viod the warrantee by flashing a different BIOS but you will viod the warratee by overclocking? Makes a lot of sense.

mmonin... overclocking doesn't void the warranty... (well, technically speaking it does...) what they don't know can't hurt them...
  • edited October 2003
Well, if overclocking voids the warranty, why ATI has put the OVERRIDE panel in the new cat 3.8, for XT series cards??

Anyway I succeeded in changing my old 9800 after the bios flash failure, simply non telling it to the shop.

Now I'm not going to flash anymore, because I know it's unuseful with Infineons

P.S.: I'm using a wb for the core, and I'm not going to fix some heatsinks on the ram cause of the warranty matter..
But in my experience I'm not sure they could give more than 10mhz overclock (heatsinks I mean)

Anyway, I confirm this core runs colder, and these Infineons run hotter than the previous one.

Only, if I could find that german site again, where they sell liquid cooling kit for memories!
    Can anybody help me?

    Bye, halfluke

I'll be picking up my Sapphire 9800 NP (SAMMY RAM!) today, along with a new Chieftec case with 4 fans. Should be a real interesting day. How's the stock cooler on the 9800? Do I need anything special?

The stock cooler for the 9800, like every other stock video card cooler (with the exception of some of the 5900s that have exotic hsfs, and the Sapphire Ultimate Edition cards) is spectacularly crappy. If you want to OC it at all, something bigger is in order. I'd suggest a 1u rackmount heatsink. If you decide to go that route, I can give you some ideas for mounting it using the standard mounting holes, so it won't void the warranty.
